A popular Christmas tradition at the turn of the century was the sharing of photograph 'holiday cards' which depicted vignettes of children, family scenes, holiday trees and decorated mantels, and bounties and bounties of dolls and toys. Although many of these photographs were commissioned by families, others were studio- arranged vignettes with 'generic' child models and typical holiday scenes. Typical themes include Christmas trees, St. Nicholas, children at play with dolls and toys, and even fantasy photographs of toy-laden children floating away in a hot-air balloon. More than 100 of these photographs and cards are presented in this book. The thirty year span which they encompass portrays vividly the changing styles of playthings, decorations and even, child's fashion.
