2) Medicine Under Canvas (How M*A*S*H was born)...
A documentary about the 77th Evacuation Hospital in WWII. From 1942 through 1945 the 77th Evacuation Hospital saw action in North Africa, England, France, Belgium and Germany. One surgeon in the unit had his own 16 mm film camera and recorded nearly 3 hours of color footage over the 3 years of duty. Combined with letters, interviews with unit members, photographs, and US government films, the story of the 77th and their service to the Allied troops and to the US is told.
A great source of information about WWII military medicine and nursing. Medicine Under Canvas details unknown aspects of medical life in wartime as well as giving the "medics view" of some of the major events of the war. The invasion of Sicily, D-Day, the Malmedy Massacre, crossing the Rhine, and even a visit to Hitler's retreat, the "Eagles Nest" are all documented from the perspective of those caring for the wounded.
