Table of Contents
Scalextric, the definitive slot car racing system, is as popular as ever. Since its introduction in 1957, there can't be many boys - whether young or grown-up - who haven't played with a set at some time. It's a tribute to the excellence of the original concept that Scalextric has remained fundamentally unchanged in design.
The variety of different cars, track sections and buildings produced over the years is quite staggering - hence the need for this fascinating history and work of reference.
First published in 1981, this book has long been recognised as the 'bible of Scalextric', providing a complete catalogue of the cars and equipment produced. Now, for this totally modernised sixth edition, the text has been revised and updated with details of all past and current models, and a new format brings full colour throughout for the first time. Some 700 photographs are featured, many of them specially commissioned for this new edition, showing models owned by dedicated collectors.
Scalextric has been produced not only in the UK but also in France, Spain, Mexico, Russia and Australia - photographs of some of the more obscure models are a particular treat here. There are also illustrations of some spectacular home and club tracks, while full details of Scalextric sets down the years are provided.
Author Roger Gillham's enthusiasm for Scalextric started in 1958, when he was given one of the early tinplate sets, and continues to this day. His interest in motor racing has extended to full-size cars too and he has personally participated in many aspects of the sport, including race marshalling, circuit racing with vintage Austin 7s and more recently speed hillclimbing, his last mount being a 1961 MGA.
