PUBLISHERS DESCRIPTION:
The chapters in this book each represent a manufacturer or grouping of manufacturers. Some lamps were made in the shops of individual railroads until such time as the cost savings associated with mass production dropped so low that buying from a manufacturer became the only reasonable option. Some railroads, such as the Milwaukee Road stayed with self-manufacturing longer than others.
What is a railroad signal lamp? By our definition, they are any lamps along the right of way or on equipment meant to alert railroad crews to the presence of other trains or obstacles or to convey safety information to personnel on board trains or crossing the path of trains.
