"Tiger Town" (1983) Roy Scheider, Justin Henry. Inspiring Disney TV movie
Don't be mislead into thinking this wonderful, inspiring piece of Heaven is just for kids just because it's from Disney because it has something to say to young and old alike and offers its message of hope and dreams to everyone. There's a lot of action, adventure and laughs, plus a message you'll take with you forever packed into this 76-minute gem. Alex (Justin Henry, the darling little boy caught in the cross-hairs of an ugly divorce in the critically acclaimed "Kramer vs. Kramer" and a slightly larger snarky little brother opposite Molly Ringwald in the delightful John Hughes romp "Sixteen Candles") and his father (Ron McLarty) are rabid Detroit Tigers fans, and though his father dies early on Alex makes it his business to attend every home game and cheer on his favorite player Billy Young (Roy "we're gonna need a bigger boat!" Scheider of "Jaws", "Blue Thunder" and many other notable features). The Tigers are struggling to overcome a serious slump in their standing in the league and Billy, who is aging and getting ready to retire, is not having too good a go of it himself. His playing is off and it seems as if he's not going to go out with quite the bang he'd hoped. Fortunately for him, he has Alex, his guardian angel, who wishes for Billy to hit a home run every time he's up at bat. Alex is having a tough time with his own support of the team by being teased and bullied mercilessly every time he cuts school early to attend the losing team's games. But somebody up there likes Alex's prayers, because Billy's game starts to turn around, and thanks to him the Tigers claw their way back from their dismal standing to the pennant race contenders.

In the climax of the film, it's a literal race to the finish as Alex is detained by some of the school bullies who steal his ticket from him. Fortunately, the Principal gets his attention and Alex must now find a way to make it to Tiger Stadium in time to affect the final game of the season against the Baltimore Orioles which will decide the pennant. Does he make it? Do his wishes keep Billy's winning streak going enough to makes both their dreams happen? Well, you'd better get the DVD and find out!

The movie is a love letter to both the Detroit Tigers and to the old Tiger Stadium, where it was filmed in its entirety. Fans will enjoy cameos by legendary Tigers coach Sparky Anderson as well as Mary Wilson (formerly of The Supremes) who returns to her home town to perform the National Anthem at the final game.

This film was released initially on VHS and later on DVD commercially, but has been out-of-print for quite some time now, and I'll be honest, we'll have to see how long the powers that be allow me to keep this post alive. I know there's a fan base for it out there and I hope it all finds this listing before it's too late.

The region-free (playable worldwide) DVD comes to you in a slim DVD case with full artwork shown here.

International (outside U.S.)orders are always welcome, and I used to send these Priority Mail for an additional fee, however as postal rates at my end have skyrocketed of late making that option unaffordable I can only offer First Class "small packet" service, which frankly has its risks, the biggest of which is the lack of tracking available, so PLEASE BE SURE YOUR MAILING ADDRESS IS COMPLETE AND ACCURATE PRIOR TO ORDERING in order to minimize the chance of non-delivery as these items are not returned to me if they cannot be delivered for any reason.

I accept personal or cashiers checks and money orders from U.S. buyers and PayPal from everyone in the whole wide world.

Thanks for looking and please feel free to message me with any questions.
