LIBERTY WEEKEND CELEBRATION JULY 1986

In 1986 the nation celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. Opening Ceremonies featured the lighting of the Statue of Liberty on July 3rd by President Reagan. Over following days the events included the Parade of the Tall Ships, a Boston Pops concert, fireworks, the swearing-in of new citizens, a New York Philharmonic concert from Central Park, and a salute to the world of sports.

The show was hosted by Peter Jennigs and Barbara Walters and entertainment was provided by some of the nations greatest names including Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Liza Minnili, Charleston Heston, Elizabeth Taylor, John Denver, Joel Gray, Shirley Maclaine, and many more. OPENING CEREMONIES JULY 3, 1986 - The Statue of Liberty had been closed for months while it was renovated are restored to natural beauty. This ceremony was by special invitation at a cost of $10,000 per guest making it one of the most costly shows in history. President Reagan lead the celebration as Liberty was relit and rededicated. Guests on hand for the opening night included Bob Hope, Helen Hayes, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra and many more.

JULY 4TH, 1986 INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION - The Boston Pops playing George Gershwin and John Phillips Sousa, , Whitney Houston, John Denver, James Whitmore, Johnny Cash, Barry Manilow, Sam Waterston as a young Abraham Lincoln, and the world's largest fireworks display ever.

THE FINAL CELEBRATION JULY 6, 1986 - The celebration comes to an end with a salute to sports with Olympic's gymnastic teams and stars like Muhammad Ali & Scott Hamilton - This was followed by an enormous live show with Willie Nelson, Patti LaBelle, Waylon Jennings, Shirley MacLaine, Liza Minnelli, Charleston Heston, Elizabeth Taylor, Gene Kelly, The Temptations, The 4 Tops, Kenny Rogers, The Pointer Sisters and many more suprises.
