"Little Murders" (1971) Elliott Gould, Vincent Gardenia DVD Jules Feiffer story
The DVD of this hilarious dark comedy has been out of print for some time, but now you can get it here from me! Noted social-commentary Village Voice cartoonist Julies Feiffer turned his mind to playwriting, and this was his first effort, in 1967. It flopped on Broadway, running only 5 performances, but was nonethless a huge hit in London, after which it returned to Broadway and was moderately successful after some minor rewrites. The film stars Elliott Gould, reprising his role of photographer Alfred Chamberlain, who is snatched up by interior designer Patsy Newquist (a wonderful performance by Marcia Rodd) as s prospective boyfriend when she fends off the muggers who have set upon Alfred who has neither the will nor desire to fight himself, and she immediately sees in him the perfect man she can "save", if only from himself. She is quick to bring Alfred home to meet her horrible dysfunctional family which includes her Parents (brilliant portrayals by Vincent Gardenia and Elizabeth Wilson) and weird brother Kenny (hysterical John Korkes) who is a hopelessly closeted homosexual. Most of the action of the film takes place, as the original play did, in the Newquist's New York apartment, however the film expands the action a bit by adding scenes where Alfred, at Patsy's insistence, takes Patsy to meet his parents (John Randolph and Doris Roberts) so she can assess where Alfred's non-caring personality comes from, as well as some scenes outdoors, notably Central Park. The play, as was the film, was written during a period when New York was experience a rash of unsolved random shootings, hence the title, but more interesting here is not only the laissez-faire attitude the Newquists have about the shootings, but also about an ongoing garbage strike and a constantly fading power supply and black-outs.

I don't want to give away too much of the story here, primarily because anyone who's been seeking this film on DVD already knows what follows, but I also don't want to give away too much of the lunacy Feiffer has created in this very dark social comedy. I WILL tell you that the Newquist family finally comes together, including the previously emotionally vacant Alfred, when they all decide to take part in a shooting free-for-all from their apartment window. The film also marks the directorial debut of Alan Arkin, who also directed the successful off-Broadway revival in 1969 and plays the part of neurotic and all-around nutty police Lt. Practice (think Gene Wilder in "The Producers") as well as Donald Sutherland as the atheist priest Reverend Dupas, plus a wonderfully funny turn by Lou Jacobi as Judge Stern (name-appropriate as he runs his courtroom like a prison!) Social commentary was always Feiffer's forte as a cartoonist, and he truly unleashes his caustic abilities here!

The region-free (playable worldwide) DVD comes to you in a slim DVD case with full artwork shown.

PLEASE NOTE: Because I burn these DVDs on an as-ordered basis, you may experience a shipping delay of a day or possibly two, but I try to avoid this if time permits!

International (outside U.S.)orders are always welcome, and I used to send these Priority Mail for an additional fee, however as postal rates at my end have skyrocketed of late making that option unaffordable I can only offer First Class "small packet" service, which frankly has its risks, the biggest of which is the lack of tracking available, so PLEASE BE SURE YOUR MAILING ADDRESS IS COMPLETE AND ACCURATE PRIOR TO ORDERING in order to minimize the chance of non-delivery as these items are not returned to me if they cannot be delivered for any reason.

I accept personal or cashiers checks and money orders from U.S. buyers and PayPal from everyone in the whole wide world.

Thanks for looking and please feel free to message me with any questions.
