"Stay The Night" (1992) Barbara Hershey, Jane Alexander UNEDITED mini-series
Barbara Hershey stars in this 3-part true-story TV miniseries as Jimmie Sue Finger, the married seductress of Kennesaw Georgia who "falls in love" with high school student Mike Kettman (Morgan Weisser) and, later in the story when she reveals her abusive husband Terry's Scott Higgs) habit of sexually molesting their teenage daughter, plots with Mike to steal the family's gun to kill him. Mike is totally smitten with the bleach-blonde bombshell hairdresser, who also happens to be the mother of his girlfriend, but is willing to do the murder given the circumstances. We don't get to learn much about the husband beyond what Jimmie Sue and daughter Donna (Heather Fairfield) reveal through dialogue, but apparently he's been raping Roxanne since she was 11 years old and it's been an ongoing thing. He's supposedly physically and verbally abusive to Jimmie Sue, but we never really see or hear that either, so Mike (and we) are in a position of having to take her word for it. Mike is ultimately tried and convicted of felony first degree murder and receives a life sentence. Through all of this, Mike's mother Blanche (Jane Alexander) is warning both Mike and Jimmie Sue herself off the unseemly relationship and at one point Mike promises to stop seeing her but can't bear the separation and goes back to her...on the condition that he terminate the awful husband. Once Mike's in prison, at first Blanche for some odd reason comes around when she sees Jimmie Sue's evident devotion to Mike, visiting him in prison constantly and deciding they will marry, and Blanche is heradlong into helping her plan their wedding, picking out wardrobes, and giving herself a make-over with Jimmie's Sue's help prompting and money from the life insurance payout. Jimmie Sue, of course, never gets implicated as an accessory in her husband's murder. Suddenly, however, she's taking up with a hunky exterminator and THEY are planning to marry! It's then that Blanche decides Jimmie Sue is no good and had something to do with her husband's murder, so she works with a reluctant police detective Malone (Fred Dalton Thompson), even though he feels implicating her is hepeless with no evidence.

The thing that bothered me most about this mini-series is the way Blanche, one minute outraged by her teenage son's relationship with a married woman twice his age and determined to put an end to it, so easily falls under Jimmie Sue's spell and is suddenly picking out wedding dresses and going on shopping and make-over sprees with her, all supportive as can be. It's only when Blanche catches Jimmie Sue with the exterminator and learns that they plan to marry and that he's basically living with her that she goes on a vigilante hunt for evidence to implicate her in her husband's murder. I mean, she has to see Jimmie Sue with another man to make the lights go on in her brain? What was wrong with her anyway, other than that she's a Southerner and probably being used to seeing far weirder sexual relationships?

The upshot is, Jimmie Sue finally DOES tip her hand during a prison visit with Mike, with which at this point he's cooperating since hearing of her plans to marry another guy...what is it with these people???

The original unedited release was on an unnecessarily long 3-VHS tape set, but considering each "volume" was less than one hour, I had no problem transferring them to a single DVD while maintaining the best quality possible given the VHS source. It's a nice clear copy with no noticeable degradation of quality. BE WARNED about other DVD releases out their which claim to be the complete miniseries but are in reality either heavily edited or transferred in a way that seriously degraded the quality. I went to lots of trouble to make sure you don't miss a single minute of this salacious tale of sex and murder and get as clear a picture as you're likely to find anywhere else.

It comes to you on a 2 region-free (playable worldwide) DVDs in a slim double DVD case with full artwork shown here.

International (outside U.S.)orders are always welcome, and I used to send these Priority Mail for an additional fee, however as postal rates at my end have skyrocketed of late making that option unaffordable I can only offer First Class "small packet" service, which frankly has its risks, the biggest of which is the lack of tracking available, so PLEASE BE SURE YOUR MAILING ADDRESS IS COMPLETE AND ACCURATE PRIOR TO ORDERING in order to minimize the chance of non-delivery as these items are not returned to me if they cannot be delivered for any reason.

I accept personal or cashiers checks and money orders from U.S. buyers and PayPal from everyone in the whole wide world.

Thanks for looking and please feel free to message me with any questions.
