"Passed Away" (1992) Bob Hoskins and and all-star cast. Comedy at a funeral!
Bob Hoskins Heads a wonderful cast in this uproarious and touching comedy centering around the death of Jack Scanlan (Jack Warden),the patriarch of a totally insane Philadelphia Irish-American family and the three days which follow, including the most outrageous wake you're likely to see ever!

As the eldest son, Johnny Scanlan (Bob Hoskins)is expected to handle all the final arrangements for his departed father, this as he's in the midst of his own mid-life crisis, gripped with an unrelenting desire to escape the confines of his marriage to his wife Amy (Blair Brown)and sail away on a boat somewhere, ANYWHERE! His father, who tells Johnny he went through the same urges once but refuses to provide details, was to reveal the secret of it all at dinner that evening, so Johnny is disappointed that his father inconveniently suffers another heart attack at his own surprise Welcome Back" party at his Union headquarters office. Faced with the prospect not only of having to make the arrangements but also dealing with his far-flung crazy family, all of whom are arriving for the funeral and wake. Johnny recruits the assistance of his pretty-but-dumb ("obtuse", as he's described by a rival Union boss)younger brother Francis (William Petersen), who feels their father should have "the best", whatever the cost. Johnny, being of a tighter mind, opts for a small service and less expensive casket, to Frank's disappointment. Now that their father is dead, Frank plans to confront the Union rival in his bid to take over the Union, but you'll see how THAT goes! In the meantime, Frank's daughter Rachel Teri Polo) is pregnant and unmarried, not only pretty much a direct ticket to Hell for Irish Catholics, but also at just about 9 months along! Dance instructor sister Terry (Pamela Reed) shows up with her ex-husband Boyd (Tim Curry), whom she's talked into accompanying her on the trip by promising him free use of her studio to rehearse in because she's never told their mother Mary (Maureen Stapleton) that they've been divorced for years and is concerned what she'll think is she shows up without him. Also arriving for the "festivities" is sister Nora (Frances MacDormand), who actually IS a sister, a nun working with natives in El Salvador. She's brought along with her one of her charges, Enrique (Antone DiLeo), whom she has smuggled into the country and they are both being pursued by INS agents who track them to the wake. All of these goings-on are being scrutinized carefully by several nosey Aunts and assorted other elderly ladies of Mary's acquaintance. So, in the midst of the wake, we have INS agents running roughshod through the house in search of Nora and her charge, rival Union boss "Froggie" (Don Brockett) showing up with two goons for a showdown with Frank over control of the Union, Rachel trying to hide her very-obvious pregnancy from Mary and the rest of the family, and Terry rekindling an old flame with her old beau Peter Syracusa (Peter Riegert)while trying to make Mary believe she and Boyd are still married. So it's not too odd when a mysterious young woman whom no one in the family seems to know shows up for both the wake and the funeral. All Johnny learns is that her name is Cassie (Nancy Travis) and that he's instantly fallen in love with her, despite his (and, as it turns out, everyone ELSE'S)assumption that she's his father's mistress. There's also an extremely young and inexperienced young priest who's been asked to officiate at the wake, Father Hallahan (Patrick Breen, in an hysterical turn), who is not the best at handling the wine he is continuously served throughout the proceedings.

I'm going to leave the rest of the plot, with all its turns and complications, for you the viewer to sort out while watching this delightful and often touching ensemble piece. It's all at turns charming, hysterical, and tear-provoking as you watch this family go through the ordeal of spending three days together.

The region-free (playable worldwide) DVD comes to you in a slim DVD case with full artwork shown.

PLEASE NOTE: Because I burn these DVDs on an as-ordered basis, you may experience a shipping delay of a day or possibly two, but I try to avoid this if time permits!

International (outside U.S.)orders are always welcome, and I used to send these Priority Mail for an additional fee, however as postal rates at my end have skyrocketed of late making that option unaffordable I can only offer First Class "small packet" service, which frankly has its risks, the biggest of which is the lack of tracking available, so PLEASE BE SURE YOUR MAILING ADDRESS IS COMPLETE AND ACCURATE PRIOR TO ORDERING in order to minimize the chance of non-delivery as these items are not returned to me if they cannot be delivered for any reason.

I accept personal or cashiers checks and money orders from U.S. buyers and PayPal from everyone in the whole wide world.

Thanks for looking and please feel free to message me with any questions.
