"The Best Man" (1964) Henry Fonda, Cliff Robertson. Still relevant today!
Watch this movie for proof of the old adage "the more things change, the more they stay the same". It's hard to believe the late Gore Vidal's political masterpiece stage play of 1962 and so faithfully transformed into this incredible film in 1964 rings as true-to-life today as it did nearly 50 years ago! Mr. Vidal wrote the screenplay for this film based on his play, which obviously explains the faithfulness, and the film features wonderful casting in all the roles.
The scene is the (presumably) Democratic Nominating Campaign, though the names of either party are never actually mentioned to keep the material as fsh and relevant as it is. The "other" *presumably Republican) party is in total disarray, so it's up to the party concerned in this story to put forth a winning nominee. While there are numerous contenders, the two front-runners are analytical, cerebral, thoughtful and pragmatic William Russell (Henry Fonda) and down-to-earth, shoot-from-the-hip, take-no-prisoners straight-talker Joe Cantwell (Cliff Robertson). While both are vying for the much-sought-after endorsement of current President Art Hockstader (Lee Tracy), who is privately dying but wants to leave the country in good hands before he goes, there are secrets of both contenders known to the other that could devastate each of their campaigns if revealed. Cantwell has learned that Russell is a bit of a philanderer and his marriage to wife Alice (Margaret Leighton) is at this point all a show. He threatens to reveal the indiscretions and marital status if Russell doesn't concede. Russell, meanwhile, has learned through an aide that Cantwell has his own secret, one concerning his military service, as well as a witness who has been flown in for the occasion to reveal it, a service member named Sheldon Bascomb (Shelley Berman), if Russell chooses to use what he's learned. Russell, who believes politics should be above personal attacks, is in a quandry, but his aides has military affadavits and testimony to support what he's learned. Should he or shouldn't he stoop to Cantwell's level and use what he knows? Meanwhile, both candidates must contend and acquiesce to the requirements for interviews and luncheons as planned by Party Chairwoman Sue Ellen Gamadge (Ann Sothern), and Joe leaves his ambitious Southern -belle wife Mabel (Edie Adams) to deal with her.
Will the candidates stoop to mud-flinging in order to win their party's nomination or will they rise above personal assaults. Which candidate of the two front-runners, if EITHER, will Hockstader bestow his much-desired endorsement upon? Will he LIVE long enough to endorse ANYONE? But most important in this piece is...will The Best Man win the nomination? You'd be surprised!

The region-free (playable worldwide) DVD comes to you in a slim DVD case with full artwork shown here.

PLEASE NOTE: Because I burn these DVDs on an as-ordered basis, you may experience a shipping delay of a day or possibly two, but I try to avoid this if time permits!

International (outside U.S.)orders are always welcome, and I used to send these Priority Mail for an additional fee, however as postal rates at my end have skyrocketed of late making that option unaffordable I can only offer First Class "small packet" service, which frankly has its risks, the biggest of which is the lack of tracking available, so PLEASE BE SURE YOUR MAILING ADDRESS IS COMPLETE AND ACCURATE PRIOR TO ORDERING in order to minimize the chance of non-delivery as these items are not returned to me if they cannot be delivered for any reason.

I accept personal or cashiers checks and money orders from U.S. buyers and PayPal from everyone in the whole wide world.

Thanks for looking and please feel free to message me with any questions.
