"The Three Stooges" (2000) TV-movie Paul Ben-Victor, Michael Chiklis as Curly!
This fun and surprisingly accurate biopic detailing the career of the famous knuckleheads starts out with a brief scene in 1912 where the carnival slapstick act "Howard Howard & Howard" (Moe, Shemp and Jerome at the time) are performing before a delighted audience. It then takes us to the "present": 1959, when Moe (Paul Ben0-Victor) is long retired and the act long over, puttering around his house and acting as an occasional errand boy at Columbia Pictures to make ends meet and to occupy some time. The whole story of the Stooges' career is told in sequential flashbacks as he relays it, reluctantly at first, to fledgling TV executive Tom Cosgrove (Joel Edgerton), who's been watching the Stooges' old shorts in the studio's screening room and wants the act to re-unite for a stage show in Boston and possibly a new start on television. We start at the beginning, with Moe and Shemp(John Kassir) acting as stooges for the vaudeville act of arrogant, self-centered Ted Healy (Marton Csokas) who uses them to milk laughs from the audience. They are soon joined by fellow performer Larry Fine(Evan Handler)to form a trio as Ted's back-up act. Ted is invited by a 20th Century Fox talent scout to come to Hollywood to audition for films and the three go along as his continuing support system. But once there and Ted's first film bombs, the studio head offers his three stooges a 7-year contract. Unfortunately, Ted is able to put the brakes on the offer by getting the studio to withdraw their offer. Moe, the real business head of the three, persuades them to stay on and keep auditioning at other studios, meanwhile picking up work wherever they can, mostly in speakeasies (this by now being Prohibition). Their newly retooled act catches the attention of all three major studio heads, however it's Harry Cohn (Linal Haft) of Columbia Pictures who appears with the firmest and seemingly most generous, a decision they will later regret on more than one level. Eventually Shemp tires of the stress of the act and decides to pull out, leaving only one possible replacement, youngest brother Jerome (Michael Chiklis), who is talked into shaving his head as well as his beloved moustache to become "Curly" in their new act: "The Three Stooges". Though Columbia (and Cohn) never lets them advance from making "shorts" (2-reel comedies, basically extended skits) to feature films, they make a comfortable living though not a great deal of money, especially since Cohn keeps their success a secret while their films keep the box office receipts flowing for the studio. Eventually, when Jerry suffers a stroke and can no longer perform, Moe and Larry, forced by their contract to provide THREE stooges, try working with Joe Besser (Laurence Coy) who is too proper to take a pie in the face, and finally decided to talk Shemp into coming back. But Shemp, still hating the work and the grind, is no Curly, and ultimately bows out. They finally find Joe DeRita (Peter Callan), who is as close to Curly as they feel they'll ever get. But the act is never quite the same and the studio finally releases them. Moe, once retired, learns from Variety that Columbia is peddling the Stooges' shorts to television and is expected to rake in millions from it. Unfortunately, he also learns from their agent that their contract does not allow payment for such things as residuals and the boys are to make NOTHING on this lucrative deal. Curly eventually dies from his stroke, followed not long after by Shemp's death, and Moe's life couldn't seem bleaker as he unsuccessfully battles the studio for the residual payments so conveniently omitted from the Stooges' contract. It is around this time that Tom Cosgrove makes his fortuitous appearance, and the rest becomes history as the career of The Three Stooges, now with DeRita, is reignited as if by magic.

You should really see this tremendous little film before the Farely Brothers' re-cap, due out in 2012, hits the theatres. This is a nicely-paced, well-played effort, and just to see Chiklis' spot-on impersonation of Curly in his films and live acts is worth the price of this DVD.

The region-free (playable worldwide)DVD comes to you in a slim DVD case with full artwork shown.

PLEASE NOTE: Because I burn these DVDs on an as-ordered basis, you may experience a shipping delay of a day or possibly two, but I try to avoid this if time permits!

International (outside U.S.)orders are always welcome, and I used to send these Priority Mail for an additional fee, however as postal rates at my end have skyrocketed of late making that option unaffordable I can only offer First Class "small packet" service, which frankly has its risks, the biggest of which is the lack of tracking available, so PLEASE BE SURE YOUR MAILING ADDRESS IS COMPLETE AND ACCURATE PRIOR TO ORDERING in order to minimize the chance of non-delivery as these items are not returned to me if they cannot be delivered for any reason.

I accept personal or cashiers checks and money orders from U.S. buyers and PayPal from everyone in the whole wide world.

Thanks for looking and please feel free to message me with any questions.
