1. THE AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS:LILLIAN GISH (73 minutes) 1984
Wonderful!! This 1984 television special of the American Film Institute honoring Lillian Gish is one of the few times they got in right!! Douglas Fairbanks, jr is a Great Host. The lovely Miss Gish, as enchanting and as eloquent as ever (and on the eve of being 90 years old!!) charms in her acceptance speech and the film clips themselves are terrific. A highlight is the appearance of Miss Gish's contemporary, Colleen Moore, and her funny and sweet recollections of Lillian Gish as the real mankiller of Hollywood!! Jennifer Jones, gorgeous as ever. Also appearing is Richard Widmark, Mary Martin, Robert Mitchum, Lily Tomlin, Cicely Tyson, and others pay tribute to this great star. Cary Grant and Fred Astaire can be seen in the audience in one of their final appearances. A WONDERFUL TRIBUTE FOR ANYONE WHO ENJOYS THE EARLY GLORY DAYS OF FILM.
QUALITY IS 9-9.5 OUT OF 10

2. LILLIAN GISH THE ACTOR'S LIFE FOR ME (55 minutes) 1988
Called the first lady of the silent screen, Lillian Gish was the archetypal silent film heroine the delicate damsel in distress, stranded on a swift-moving ice floe, cowering before a sadistic brute, languishing in a garret, etc. In this Emmy-award winning documentary, a film by Terry Sanders, originally presented on PBS "American Masters," the celebrated actress reflects on her life and work spanning the 20th century, particularly her years as D.W. Griffith's favorite leading lady and collaborator. Narrated by Eva Marie Saint and told by Lillian Gish herself, the film showcases generous footage of all of Lillian's most memorable performances in movies such as "Birth of a Nation," "Broken Blossoms," "Way Down East," "Orphan's of the Storm," "Night of the Hunter," "The Whales of August," and many other's. Presented in Color and B&W. A really nice documentary.
QUALITY IS 10 OUT OF 10

3. THE GREAT DIRECTOR D.W. GRIFFITH (52 minutes) BBC 1966
This is an interesting, RARE 1966 BBC West hour-long B&W documentary titled... THE GREAT DIRECTOR. About the legendary cinema pioneer David Wark Griffith. Produced by JOHN BOORMAN & Researched by WILLIAM K. EVERSON. Griffith has o ften been called the father of the motion picture, he was the first director to fully realize the medium's potential. His contemporary Cecil B. DeMille once declared of Griffith: "He taught us how to photograph thought."
Griffith joined the Biograph Company in 1908 as a movie actor, and over the next four years his one-reel pictures made the words "Biograph Tonight" a welcome sign in front of nickelodeons throughout the land. Griffith explored technique and developed the device of cross-cutting to heighten screen tension. His most ambitious film, a 12-reel adaptation of Thomas Dixon's barnstorming stage melodrama "The Clansman," was retitled The Birth of a Nation when it was released in 1915. With its sweeping battle scenes, tender moments of human drama, and the skillful (if highly inflammatory) ride of the Ku Klux Klan for a rousing climax, the film was a sensation, and Griffith was hailed as the "Shakespeare of the screen." He followed the Civil War epic with another large-scale film, Intolerance (1916), which unfolded three historic narratives and a modern story simultaneously by intercutting the action at dramatic moments. The film was recognized as a masterpiece.
Griffith became one of the founders of United Artists in 1919. ( see my other dvd's for sale ) Griffith received a special Oscar for his contributions to the art of motion pictures in 1935. This British documentary also includes rare photos and film sequences from the WWI drama Hearts of the World (1918), America (1924), a tale of the American Revolution, The Sorrows of Satan (1926), The Battle of the Sexes (1928), and Abraham Lincoln (1930), his first all-talkie. PLUS there is a terrific on-camera interview with MISS LILLIAN GISH, audio remarks from ERICH VON STROHEIM, and some RARE silent movie, behind-the-scenes footage of Griffith at work on "Intolerance" and "Hearts Of The World."
John Boorman's first feature, "Having a Wild Weekend" (1965), was a competent, exuberant 1960s musical featuring the Dave Clark Five. After "The Great Director" (1966), a documentary on D.W. Griffith for the BBC, Boorman moved to the USA and directed the genre-bending "Point Blank" (1967). He went on to direct films like "Deliverance" and "Excalibur." THIS IS A WONDERFUL AND INFORMATIVE FILM HISTORY. Originally Narrated by Clive Swift of BBC's "Keeping Up Appearances"
QUALITY FROM THE ORIGINAL PRINT IS 8.5-9 OUT OF 10 BUT IS REMARKABLY CLEAR
