"The Assassination Bureau" (1969) Oliver Reed, Diana Rigg. Dark Brit humour!
This hilariously frantic lunacy-filled romp is loosely based on an unfinished novel by Jack London and later finished by Robert L. Fish. This was previously released on DVD and VHS and is currently commercially unavailable, at least in North America. The insanity begins in London in the early 1900s where intrepid, gutsy but naive girl reporter Sonya Winter (Diana Rigg) is trying to sell a story idea to the city's largest daily paper run by Lord Bostwick (Telly Savalas, doing an ambitious but ultimately quite flawed British accent) based on her theory that a string of high-profile murders are somehow linked. She believes the placement of classified ads which all bear the word "Mesopotamia" followed by codes which reveal the locations of where actual murders occurred will require undercover investigative skills which only she possesses, in order to discover who is perpetrating the crimes. Bostwick decides to put her on the trail but asks that she never reveal the name of her employer. Her investigations ultimately lead her to businessman Ivan Dragomiloff (Oliver Reed), whom she is shocked to learn heads an Assassination Bureau that, for a price, will murder anyone in the world, but only if they deem the potential victim to be "worthy". Not making it known she is investigating him for a newspaper but is rather a potential client who has learned of his Bureau's "services", and also acknowledging to herself that he finds his life's work despicable and loathsome, she offers him 20,000 pounds (quite a sum in 1900!) if he can arrange the assassination of someone she finds to be a vile and immoral transgressor...himself! Being the excellent businessman that he is, and seeing the value of accepting the commission for all the good public relations it will bring his company, he agrees to her proposition and later informs the Board that he has done so. This round-table of crumbs will of course be the ones responsible for carrying out Ivan's murder. Unfortunately, the caveat of this seemingly simple arrangement is that each must get to him before he does THEM in, and he promptly dispatches one of them while they're still at the Board's table. From here on, it's a wild and wooly chase all over Europe as Ivan, followed by the ever-present Sonya, seeks out his on-the-run Board members while they are in equal hot pursuit of them.
The film is full of snappy, rapid-fire dialogue and slapstick-like chases as the action progresses. It's tons of fun and full of surprises. I won't reveal any more here because I don't want to spoil the revelations for those who have yet to see this comic gem. The script, by Michael Relph, is filled with twists and turns and plenty of hysterical situations, all beautifully directed by the incredible Basil Deardon.

The region-free (playable worldwide) DVD comes to you in a slim DVD case with artwork shown.

PLEASE NOTE: Because I burn these DVDs on an as-ordered basis, you may experience a shipping delay of a day or possibly two, but I try to avoid this if time permits!

International (outside U.S.)orders are always welcome, and I used to send these Priority Mail for an additional fee, however as postal rates at my end have skyrocketed of late making that option unaffordable I can only offer First Class "small packet" service, which frankly has its risks, the biggest of which is the lack of tracking available, so PLEASE BE SURE YOUR MAILING ADDRESS IS COMPLETE AND ACCURATE PRIOR TO ORDERING in order to minimize the chance of non-delivery as these items are not returned to me if they cannot be delivered for any reason.

I accept personal or cashiers checks and money orders from U.S. buyers and PayPal from everyone in the whole wide world.

Thanks for looking and please feel free to message me with any questions.
