Heywood - Wakefield Antique Art Nouveau Theater Seating
Heywood and Wakefield manufactured this beautiful Theater Seating that was last used in the (now closed) Istrouma Lodge #414 of the Free Mason's Temple in North Baton Rouge, Louisiana. One Refinished Single Theater Seat starts at $450.00.
Our research leads us to believe that the Cast Iron Standards (end frames) mounted with 2-piece Seat Backs of Yellow Birch were created by Heywood-Wakefield in Gardner, Massachusetts between 1890 and the early 1920's. These Antique Theater Seats were originally installed in a Theater in New York. We are in the process of discovering exactly which theater and the time-line of history of these wonderful Theater Chairs. Foundry Markings on the inside of the Cast Iron Standards seem to indicate that an "A" row and a "B" row were fabricated, along with 2 styles and sizes of hand-carved, individually matched 2-piece Seat Backs made from Laminated Yellow Birch. The fold up Seat Bottoms are made from sheet steel with hand cut and hand-hammered edges.
Through the restoration of the first Theater Chair pictured below, we discovered that the seats were originally covered in a dark maroon upholstery with a floral embossed pattern in the fabric. Once the Theater Seats were moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in the 1940's, the Seat Backs and Seat Bottoms were recovered in either a Masonic Blue or Red Naugahyde "Pleather" Fabric. Once we removed the Masonic Blue Paint from the woodwork, we thought that the look of dark brown faux leather would complement the Yellow Birch Seat Back and Carved Oak Armrests. The possibilities of finishes to the woodwork or colors of fabric can be combined to match or become the basis of any room decor.
We restored this 1st piece as a single Antique Theater Chair , but these can be configured to meet the needs of your Home Theater space, your Office or Waiting Room. This Antique Theater Seating can be restored and installed as a pair, a triple, four, five or six, stationed in a single or double row of beautiful, historic, handcrafted, American-made Theater Seating.
