This movie is really, as George Burns informs you in the opening minutes, two movies in one. It's an absolutely hysterical riff on the double features of the 1930's, written by the great Larry Gelbart ("M.A.S.H." TV and many other credits) and Sheldon Leonard team and with an all-star cast lead by George C. Scott. The first movie is a take off on the sports drama genre popular in the '30s, "Dynamite Hands", about a good boy gone bad then good again as a heavyweight boxer Joey Popchik, who decides to go into the game to raise money to cure his sister's impending blindness. This stars Harry Hamlin with featured roles by Art Carney as the doctor, George C. as a big-time boxing coach "Gloves" (what else!) Molloy, Red Buttons as Joey's trainer "Peanuts", Michael Kidd as Joey's dad "Pop" Popchik, Kathleen Beller as Joey's poor little sister Angie, and Ann Reinking as the bad showgirl and mobster's gal "Troubles" Moran. You may ask yourself how this can tense-sounding drama be funny, well believe me, it's start-to-finish laughs ripping the genre from head to toe! The second "movie" is an wonderful spin on the big splashy 1930's musicals called "Baxter's Beauties" of 1933", starring Scott as the great showman "Spats" Baxter (think Florenz Siegfeld big!) who learns from doc Art Carney that his last test results showed he has 6 months to line...5 months ago!...and decides to put on his biggest show ever as his legacy. This one features Barry Bostwick as the boy songwriter turned male lead, Red Buttons in his by-now-familiar role as Spats' sidekick and stagehand, Barbara Harris as showgirl Trixie, and Trish Van De Vere as the primadonna female star who ends up drunk, allowing the seamstress showgirl-wannabe to go on and wowing the crowd as the new star. Oh, it turns out she's also...get ready for it...the daughter Spats never knew he had! This whole confection is choreographed by the great Michael Kidd.
This movie came out in 1978 and was released briefly on VHS and sadly never resurfaced on DVD, therefore my own region-free (playable worldwide) DVD transfer is in the only format available in the 1970's, full-screen. However the transfer came out quite clean considering.
It comes to you in a slim DVD case with full artwork shown, plus a cast-of-characters list I created myself as an insertion
IMPORTANT ORDERING NOTE: The film was originally released with the "Dynamite Hands" segment in black-and-white to create more of the feel of the period, however when the VHS was produced, Magnetic Video for some reason decided to "colorize" it. However, for you purists out there who would prefer the film as it was originally released, I'm also offering the version with the "Dynamite Hands" in its original black-and-white. Therefore, when you order, you'll need to advise me if you want the all-color version or the B&W-color. IF YOU DO NOT STATE A PREFERENCE, THE ALL-COLOR VERSION WILL BE SENT, so please take that into consideration when ordering.
If you've never seen this laugh-fest, you must buy this DVD! It's the funniest thing to come out of the '70s since "Blazing Saddles"!
