This delightful and charming fantasy stars the radiant Irene Dunne (her last screen role)as frazzled housewife Polly Baxter, a typical middle-class housewife valiantly trying to manage in the family's insufficient finances while trying to keep her 3 children and her ever-patient husband Phil (a wonderful portrayal by the always-likeable Dean Jagger)happy and with their various life needs met.One day she returns home with two scrawny trees from the local florist which she envisions as eventually providing shade in their back yard, and which she couldn't resist because they were "terribly cheap" (her favorite reason to give Phil whenever she impulse-buys junk). Once planted and cared for, they finally come to bloom, when Polly discovers they bear a most interesting "fruit"...$5- and $10-dollar bills! Feeling it would be unwise to reveal this to Phil, she proceeds to completely redecorate and re-paint their home plus get every overdue bill paid. Poor befuddled Phil is dumbfounded by Polly's suddenly remarkable money management and budgeting skills! Polly decides the right thing to do is write the U.S. Treasury Department to ask whether her "currency" is legal tender, at which point her correspondence, viewed as a joke, gets passed along to several other branches of the Government to respond, and they do...telling her that if she has succeeded in growing money it is absolutely legitimate! She soon has her suspicious and nosey neighbor lady snooping around, discovering Polly's cache in the kitchen canisters, and proceeds to stuff her top with fistfuls! All mayhem eventually breaks loose when Phil, off an a business trip, gets arrested for trying to pass counterfeit money, and Polly's eldest daughter's fiance (Richard Crenna, his usual goofy self), a bank teller, presents Polly's full cash payment on their home mortgage to his manager because the bills are "wilting"! The surprise ending, the last 15 seconds, is an absolute hoot! This sweet little movie has for some reason never been released on any format, and if you like good clean, unpretentious little family fantasies this is for you! It's in black and white, full-screen format. I recorded it to VHS years ago from an AMC presentation, then transferred it to DVD and it is absolutely flawless.
