How you make the move to Windows 7 depends on your current operating system.
Windows Vista
The transition to Windows 7 should be pretty smooth, although you may need to update your system to the latest service pack first.
Windows XP (or any other operating system)
We recommend that you experience Windows 7 on a new PC. While we don't recommend it, you can opt to upgrade your current PC from Windows XP or another operating system to Windows 7. You may want to determine whether the platform of Windows Vista is installed. To verify that you have the platform of Windows Vista, follow these steps:

Pros: Upgrade version is significantly cheaper than full retail version. Some users of Vista may not notice all the changes, but it really is a better OS in nearly every way. Upgrade can be used to do an in-place upgrade of systems currently running Vista. Upgrade works for Win XP users, too, but there's a big "gotcha."
Cons: Some users of Vista may not notice all the changes. There isn't much to differentiate it from Vista for many casual users. Not as versatile as the full retail version.
Other Thoughts: Upgrade can be used by Win XP users, but it requires a clean install, asks to insert old XP disc during install to verify you have a legit copy of XP before proceeding with installation. You should really do a backup before upgrading anyway, but this forces your hand and adds a few extra steps (and a lot of time) to the process. If you want to do an install on a machine that doesn't have XP or Vista already installed, apparently you have to install one of the older OS's first and then install Win 7 Upgrade.
To upgrade Win XP you'll have to do a backup of your system before wiping your old XP installation if you want to save your stuff. Importing an XP backup into Vista or Win 7 requires you to download a special backup restoration app from MS that can read backups created by Win XP.

Note: Don't be fooled by sellers claiming "requires NO Key" "unlimited installs" What they are really selling is an enterprise version owned by a big corporation and will be blocked/flagged/blacklisted by Microsoft in due time. How does a product cd-key get blacklisted? To many times being activated with the same product key in this case it's integrated into the software but I've seen even that become blacklisted from Microsoft.
This will bite these stupid seller in the ass very soon when all his customers start to get an UN genuine alerts on their computers. By then the seller will be long gone. In the end the customers get screwed out of their money and product. |
