At one time the most suggestive show on television, Deans show not only commented on other variety shows but continued in spinoff form with the later roast format. Dean was able to use his own singing, joking and acting in a situation that could lampoon the past, push the envelope in risk and still seem like good, semi-clean fun.

Spontaneity (in short supply after the invention of videotape) was literally forced on the actors and crew by doing what dean martin did or didnt do - he showed up minutes before airtime knowing the sketch but totally unrehearsed with the other players. Whatever happened, happened. When it was on the money, it was a high point in midcentury comedy.

Throughout the run, dean martin never knew who would come walking through the door at the beginning of each show. This was to make it a lot funnier.

Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts came about in the final season of Dean Martins variety show (The Dean Martin Show), when it was declining in popularity. They added a celebrity roast feature to try to pick up the rating, which proved very popular to television audiences. After the shows cancellation, Martin signed a contract with NBC to do Celebrity Roasts Specials lasting for almost a decade.

Dean Martin Celebrity Roast ran from August 1, 1974 to December 1, 1974. Famous roastees includes Michael Landon, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Gleason, Jimmy Stewart, Bob Hope, Ronald Reagan, Lucille Ball, Danny Thomas, George Burns, Jack Benny, Johnny Carson, Ed McMahon, Don Rickles, Angie dickinson, Carol OConnor, Redd Foxx, Hugh Hefner, Wilt Chamberlain, Telly Savalas, Bette Davis, Hank Aaron, Evel Knievel, Mr. T, Mohammed Ali, and and Dean Martin himself.

A celebrity roast is an event in which a celebrity is subject to insults, praise, true and untrue unusual stories, and tributes. The celebrity is surrounded by friends, fans, and family during the roast (party and presentation). It is considered an honor to be roasted.
This two-hour television special was assembled by the shows producer and director, Greg Garrison. It highlights some of the most outrageous moments from this popular network series. Watch as Dean and his friends shower each other with insult after insult. Each roast featured the "Man of the Hour" as Dean and his celebrity pals took shots at the honored guest, and at each other, in an endless stream of hysterical putdowns. This program contains highlights from the roasts of Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, Michael Landon, Muhammed Ali and Dean Martin himself.
