I have 15K United Airline mile. It can be used for one-way upgrade in regiona 1( with most of the paid fare). Region 1 includes United States (Hawaii and Alaska included), Canada, Caribbean, Central America and Mexico. If you pay the full fare( Y or B), you only need 8K mile to upgrade. If you pay the Y/B fare for the trip to rest of the world with United, you can use 15K mile for the one-way upgrade.
15K mile can also get you inter-Hawaii roundtrip business class or first class ticket. The price does not include the tax and fees that might be involved.
