Northern Virginia Tile Installers questions about Installing Your Tile Directly To a Wood Surface?
Northern VA Tile Contractors cannot install tile directly to the following: Luan plywood, cushioned vinyl flooring, particle boards of any type, O.S.B. (Oriented Strand Board), tongue & groove planking, Chip board, and hardwood floors
Ceramic tile, Porcelain tile: Northern VA Tile Contractors does NOT recommend tile installation directly to plywood surfaces. Plywood has a smooth surface, and when it is exposed to moisture, it tends to swell, warp, and delaminate . Although it can be done successfully, we will not guarantee tile installations on these surfaces.
Sub Floor: Northern VA Tile Installers believes construction should consist of a double layered, 1-1/8" thick, exterior grade plywood installed over floor joists spaced a maximum of 16" on center. Face grains of first plywood layer should be installed perpendicular to joists for maximum stiffness and staggered with an 1/8" wide gap between each sheet. Install plywood panel edges 1/4" away from restraining surfaces, including perimeter walls, cabinetry, and door jambs. These are expansion gaps and should not be bridged with setting material. In addition, sub floor deflection should not exceed L/360 of span.
To prevent moisture damage: Tile Installers recommend that a waterproofing membrane be installed over the plywood substrate per the manufacturer's instructions over all plywood surfaces to be tiled.
Installing ceramic Tile: Northern Virginia Tile Installers will use a thin set mortar that is latex modified and approved for use over plywood substrates.
Installing Tile Over Vinyl Or Linoleum Floor Coverings:
Northern VA Contractors does not recommend ceramic tile installation directly to vinyl or linoleum surfaces . We will install ceramic or porcelain, however we can not guarantee this installation. If we must, Vinyl or linoleum flooring must be a non-cushioned type and securely attached to the sub floor.
If you are concerned that your vinyl or linoleum flooring may contain asbestos fibers we recommend that you have it tested before attempting to remove it. For more information on asbestos, please refer to Asbestos In Your Home provided by the EPA.
If the floor covering does not contain asbestos fibers we recommend that the surface be scarified or sanded to provide a rougher surface for the thin set mortar to bond to.
Installing Tile Over Ceramic Tile Backer boards:
Cement backer boards should also be installed over plywood sub floors in combination with a thin set mortar bed. Screws or nails should be installed every 6" to 8" on center. Sub floor deflection should not exceed L/360 of span. Ceramic tile backer boards will add to the height of your new floor and may require height reducing thresholds or transition strips where tile meets carpet, vinyl, hardwood, etc. Doors may also need to be trimmed for these tile installations.
To prevent moisture from damaging the plywood sub floor Northern VA Tile Contractors recommend using a water proof membrane over all ceramic tile and porcelain tile backer board surfaces including shower and tub wall facings.
Installing Tile Directly To Concrete Slabs:
Northern Virginia Contractors will NOT install tile over the following: Paint, gypsum based fillers or levelers, sealers, cutback adhesives, or chemically treated cement substrates. They should be removed by non-chemical methods whenever possible.
Before installation of porcelain, ceramic, ar marble tile: concrete substrates must be cleaned, mop cement slab using clean water only to remove dust, and allow to dry completely. An acid based solution should be used on very smooth concrete to roughen it up.
Northern VA Contractors will fill in and float off any dips, humps, or waves on the concrete foundation using a floor leveler. We use this to fill the cavity, then screed off using a level or straight edge. For humps, we apply the floor leveler around the base of the protrusion, then, using the top of the hump as a guide, level the floor around the base of the hump. This helps to lessen the impact the protrusion on your finished floor.
Most Portland cement based floor levelers need to cure for at least 24 hours before the tile can be installed. |
