This amazing little loom was once used in the Devereux Mansion Sanitorium as occupational therapy to assist healing in mental health patients.
Herbert Hall, the father of occupational Therapy and founder of Devereux Mansion in Marble head, MA, commisioned the construction of these looms in about about 1904. The loom was one of several made for Dr. Hall by "a fine cabinet maker here in Marblehead," according to Dr. Hall's widow.
Along with pottery and woodworking, weaving comprised part of Hall's "work cure" for patients with nervous dis-orders.
One of these looms is know to be owned by the Marblehead (MA) Mueseum and Historical Society, and one by the Carroll County Farm Museum (Westminster, MD)
It measures 34 inches wide, by 27.5 inches deep and about 40-43 inches high.
It comes as shown, with a bench and many shuttles (hand carved) and other wooden parts.
The only missing part is an iron clamp (I have shown the one that is on and the missing side).
The wood would polish up nicely, I believe, and the only "disfigurement" is a little old tan paint on the bench. I think I could get that off as well.
This amazing little loom was a hero in the first part of its life, and is looking for a good home now. I purchased it about 40 years ago and it has been in an extra bedroom in my home since that time.
