Medicine Buddha
Medicine Buddha is also called Bhaisajya Buddha. The Buddha’s teaching on suffering is the core of his thought. He can be seen as a physician because he diagnosed suffering and developed his teachings on Dharma as a medicine to help all the living beings to escape from the cycle of rebirth. Historically, the science of Ayurvedi medicine (a traditional Hindu system of medicine based on the idea of balance in bodily systems emphasizing diet, herbal treatment, yogic breathing, etc.) reached the Himalayas and deeply influenced Tibetan medicine. The knowledge was not specifically Buddhist, although it did accompany Buddhist teaching. A Buddha was created, along the analogy of Shakyamuni as spiritual healer, who symbolized medicinal knowledge. This system was expanded to the Eight Medicine Buddha. Of the eight, Bhaisajyaguru is the most important. In the Buddhist sense, hatred, desire, and ignorance are the main ailments that torment and poison the body and soul. They disturb the balance of bodily fluids so that illness arises. There are also external influences at work that can negatively impact the body. These influences are evil spirits, a particular position of the planets, negative karma, improper food, and irreligious behavior. The spiritual cure can be found through trained thought and action. Calling on particular deities and meditation may be part of the therapy. The Medicine Buddha is said to dispense spiritual medicine when properly worshipped. Moreover, an efficacious cure may be accomplished by merely touching the image.
