Vic Damone: On The Street Where You Live DVD
Born Vito Rocco Farinola in Brooklyn on 12th June 1928, Vic Damone (he took his mother's maiden name when he entered showbiz) was encouraged to embrace the world of music from a very early age. His mother taught piano and his father played guitar. His father accompanied him on guitar from the age of two and his mother later scrimped to find the $1 he needed for music lessons.
When his father was forced to stop working following an accident Vic dropped out of high school and went to work as an usher at the legendary Paramount Theatre in New York. It was there that he met Perry Como and legend states that whilst in the lift together Damone asked the star for some advice. Como agreed, Damone stopped the lift and began to sing a few bars of "There Must Be A Way" which Mr. Como insisted he sing to the end. "You've really got something kid" said the star "Don't stop singing".
Damone's career really took off just before his 18th birthday when he won the acclaimed Arthur Godrey Talent Scout's programme, which lead to regular spots on the radio series on WHN New York. He soon became a household name and was signed to Mercury Records, began to appear in several movies and eventually had his own TV show on NBC. He recorded over 2,000 songs, the most famous of which are "On The Street Where You Live", which confirmed his super-star status, and his matchless rendition of Harry Warren's "An Affair To Remember".
Recorded at the world famous Royal Festival Hall, London on 7th March 1985, this DVD includes both the aforementioned songs as well as many other hits and standards from his vast repertoire. Accompanies by the Northern Dance Orchestra & Conductor - Norman Geller, Damone enchants and entertains as only a professional at the very top of his game can do.
