As with any Andy Kaufman performance, you're never quite sure where reality ends and comedy begins. Andy stars here as himself in, what else, The Andy Kaufman Show. He is joined by, among others, a marionette of his alter ego, obnoxious dive-lounge comedian Tony Clifton. Is Andy putting us on when he and his former girlfriend Elayne Boosler air their dirty laundry? Is Andy's enthusiasm for a tone-deaf singer feigned during a segment entitled "The Has-Been Corner"? When his guest Dr. Alex Shorr is unmasked as a fraud, is it a setup? This whole show may be a joke, spoof, or serious attempt at creating a late-night talk show. But who knows? That's what makes it fun. That's what makes it Andy Kaufman. |
