THE EDGE
This sketch Comedy series made extensive use of animation & Computer graphics to give it an unstructured MTV look. There were commercial rip-offs & put-downs, Celebrity satires & Parodies of TV series; "Beverly Hills 90210", "Sally Jessy Raphael", "Studs" ("Sluts") “Designing Women“ & more, plus Videos and "cartoon" violence that teetered on the “EDGE“ with the sensors. Most episodes began with the cast assembling onstage & then being decapitated, crushed, blown up, or otherwise destroyed just before the first commercial break. One recurring sketch showed a giant Delta Burke plucking people from houses & eating them. The "Armed Family" was about a pleasant middleclass family who continually shot each other, and everyone else, at the least provocation. Another was a bizarre animation of a guy in a suit who reacted to situations, metamorphosed, and then disassembled. Some of the sketches were gross & tasteless, while others were hilariously funny. Julie Brown, one of the featured performers, also wrote & produced some of these sketches.
The series created an uproar when powerful Hollywood producer Aaron Spelling (Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, & Others) threatened to sue over it's wild lampoons of his sex-driven shows. In one 90210 set up, an actress portraying Tori Spelling (His real life Daughter) hogged scenes & kicked other cast members, screaming "I can do that because it's Daddy's Show" Spelling demanded a public apology, which the producer David Mirkin refused to give.
Fox stated the show ran only one season because of poor ratings; but it's run was cut short more because of "Lawsuits" than ratings !!!
