Two Early American Hand Scripted Hand Colored Prints
One called “Liberty” the other Called “Study”
Study
B Whilton Script
Liberty C. B. fculp
W Clark Script
Both measure 15” X 10 1/2 “
We bought these two pieces about 30 years ago from an antique dealer in Wisconsin, who said he had bought them from a dealer on the East Coast. Both feature a beautiful hand scripted style reminiscent of Early America and sayings of that time. And both feature a hand colorized engraving at the top of the piece followed by poetic inspirational - philosophical sayings.
For example on the Liberty piece it features a castle with a mote and a man and a horse on this side of the mote. The script says poetically
“The Love of Liberty with Life is giv’n, And Life it felf’s th’inferior gift of heav’n.”
Lucius seems fond of Life; but what is Life?
Tis not to stalk about, and draw fresh Air
From time to time, or gaze upon the Sun;
Tis to be Free. When Liberty is gone,
Life grows insipid, and has lofe its Relish
Tis Liberty of Choice that tweetens Life, Makes rj glad hufband t rj happy Wife.
Signed by W. Clark sr. and hand scripted in W. Clark Script.
Are the pieces antiques… I don’t know or are they simply nicely done reproductions ?
Regardless they are attractive because of the different beautiful script used in each piece and the detailed hand colored etching at the top of each piece. Add to that the inspiring - philosophical sayings on the topics of Liberty and Study and you have two pieces to keep and treasure. |
