THE MIKE HAMMER COLLECTION
STACEY KEACH IS; MIKE HAMMER
When Mickey Spillane's "Mike Hammer" turned up on network television, 25 years after the syndicated version was produced, things were little changed. It was still violent, sexist, and full of wisecracks. Mike's secretary, Velda, not seen in the syndicated version, was bustily present, as were a host of other beauties poured into tight low-cut dresses to emphasize their obvious assets. There was also a regular coterie of street people and contacts, the most prominent of whom was Ozzie the Answer, Mike's most reliable source of information, jenny was the sexy (what else?) bartender at the light-n'-Easy, Mike's favorite hangout.. His good buddy Pat, as well as Richie & Hennessy, were cops on the N.Y.P.D., and Barrington was the asst. D.A. with whom he never saw eye to eye. Mike's best friend, however, was not a person, but a .45 caliber pistol he had nicknamed "Betsy" and carried with him almost all his waking hours.
Along with the typical cases of murder, extortion, kidnapping, and robbery were cases dealing with drug dealing & problems of the elderly. Regardless of the case, however, Mike always solved it, leaving a trail of bloodied bad guys & swooning women in his wake. There was one thing Mike never did quite solve. At some point in each episode he would catch a glimpse of the same striking beautiful brunette (Practically the only attractive woman on the show whose assets were only on display from the neck up), but he never got close enough the actually meet her before she disappeared. The show's producers planned to build a 1985 Episode around Mike's finally meeting "The Face", but by then Stacy Keach was serving a 6 month jail term in England for cocaine possession & the 1984-1985 season had to be cut short before the episode was filmed.
The series did have a great, and possibly most remembered, third season, Sept. 27 1986 to May 13, 1987, it was toned down in the sex department to try to attract female viewers. It was re-titled "The New Mike Hammer", and started it's run with a 2 hour Episode, (With the same Title) which ran earlier April 18, 1986.
In the last episode, "A Face in the Night", Mike finally met "The Face" and, after a rather convoluted plot, found out she was an author following him & watching his activities so that she could "fictionalize" his exploits in a series of detective novels. After one memorable romantic evening she disappeared from his life.
A Final Movie "Murder Takes All" was run May 21, 1989, to try to revive another season for the aging series & stars, but it never happened. It's a shame, this series was a landmark for Mr. Spillane, his original characters & TV detective series in general. One great loss for everyone who enjoyed exciting, thrilling & dramatic television.
Of course you can now watch a few people trapped on an island, with only a support team of 60, a ship off shore, two helicopters, a medical team of 18, and a TV crew of who knows how many doing the filming ;;;; a real thriller !!! ?????????????? FOR WHO?????
