SYNOPSIS:
Private Eye was a 1987-1988 television series. The setting is in the city of Los Angeles in the year 1956. Ex-cop Jack Cleary (Michael Woods), embittered over his brother's death, becomes a Mickey Spillane like private detective, He sets out to solve his Brother Nick's murder. A Rock 'n' roll idol Johnny Betts (John Brolin) becomes Jack Cleary's largely unwelcome partner when the trail of evidence leads to a scandal in the record industry. The Pilot is partly inspired by the "Payola" imbroglio of 1959, which (so far as we know) resulted in very few murders. Bill Sadler and Lisa Persky costar, while Jay O. Sanders plays Jack's older brother Nick Cleary, the background music was provided by Joe Jackson. Private Eye was first telecast September 13, 1987 on NBC.
This is a detective series was set in the 1950's Hollywood. Jack Cleary is a (virtuous) cop and his virtue cost him his badge--he tried to expose corruption within his department, and the cops he tried to expose framed him, and subsequently he got thrown off the force. For the next few years, Jack tried to drown his sorrows in the bottle. His brother is a private investigator, when he gets killed while on a case, Jack sets out to find his killer. He would then take over his brother's (private eye) business. Working with him is Johnny Betts, a young man who worked with his brother.
