Gorgeous pair of pre-ban* carved Antique Solid Ivory Chinese seated Emperor and Empress Statues. Each one is magnificently carved, including the thrones -- the emperor's throne has dragon figures, the empress' has phoenix figures.
Emperor stands 6 ½” high, base is 2 7/8” wide and 2 ½” deep and weights 1lb. 3oz. He has a long string of beads around his neck and holding them in his left hand. His throne has four dragon heads carved into it. One at each arms rest and one at each top front corners. The legs of his throne are claws and directly above each leg is the face of a dragon. The back of the throne is deeply carved with two dragons facing each other ready for combat.
The front of his rode has the face of yet another “dragon”.
Empress stands 6 1/4” high; base is 2 3/4” wide and 2 3/8” deep and weights 15 oz. She also has a long string of beads around her neck and she is holding some type of a gift, which looks like a “tied pouch” in her right hand. Her throne has four phoenix heads carved into it. One at each arms rest and one at each top front corners. The legs of her throne are claws and directly above each leg is the face of a dragon. The back of the throne is deeply carved with two phoenixes facing each other with wings spread. Her hat or “crown” has three slightly raised figures flat figures of three phoenixes with their wings spread.
The front of her rode is delicately and gracefully carved.
Both statues are ornately carved and highlighted with black ink and in excellent, pristine condition. |
