The Most Hated Family in America is a TV documentary written and presented by the BBC's Louis Theroux about the family at the heart of the Westboro Baptist Church. At the heart of the documentary is the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), a U.S. church group headed by Fred Phelps and based in Topeka, Kansas. It runs the website GodHatesFags.com, and GodHatesAmerica.com, and other websites expressing condemnation of homosexuals, Roman Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Sweden, Ireland, Canada, and other groups. The organization is monitored by the Anti-Defamation League and classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The group has achieved national notoriety in recent years due to its picketing of funeral processions of US soldiers killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The church bases its work around the belief that nearly every tragedy in the world is God's punishment for homosexuality. It maintains that God hates homosexuals above all other kinds of "sinners" and that homosexuality should be a capital crime.
I have to say this documentary really made me sad. These are the same people that wanted to picket Heath ledgers funeral, citing Ledger died for portraying the role of a gay man in "Brokeback Mountain." It is clear in the documentary the mother of this clan rules with a iron fist, not even allowing her 22 year old daughter to go for a soda or anywhere without her permission. She forces her 5 and 6 year old kids to hold signs at the funerals of soldiers saying GODS HATES FAGS and other hateful sayings. When her 6 year old son is pegged in the face with a cup, she barely comforts him, and it becomes glaringly obvious she is not only hurting others, but her own children.
