We’ve added Mylar to one side of this pad, while Silent Blue™ needs no added moisture protection since it is composed of closed cell membranes that cannot be penetrated by moisture. Sometimes it tears while being walked on during installations. The rips need to be mended with a polyethylene tape or Silent Blue™ Tape. When this new product is installed, it becomes very difficult to rip or tear during installation; saving a little time.

Here is an easy way for you to make sure that you are really getting an underlayment with a Sound Rating of IIC72 / STC73, the highest available sound ratings in the U.S. Go to the manufacturer's website and look for Independent Testing Laboratory Results.
The only product that uses an independent testing laboratory that I know of is Silent Blue™. The sound rating tests are too expensive for just anyone to pay for, but this ensures that you are getting a pad with real sound deadening qualities. Visit the Silent Blue website, and look for the Test Laboratory link, you will see the original test results. Don't waste your money on cheap imitations, just because it's blue doesn't mean it's SILENT.

*Each roll of tape should be just about enough for four (4), one hundred square foot rolls of Silent Blue™ Underlayment. This is a conservative estimate; amount needed can vary depending on the amount of seaming that needs to be taped. The Silent Blue™ manufacturer contacted me told me that in their experience 1 roll of tape usually covered well over 400 sq. ft. this is their example: If a room is 20 X 20 you will need 5 runs of tape at 20 ft. each 5 X 20 = 100 and you’d still have 65 linear feet left over.

Impact Insulation Class (IIC)
Transmission of impact noise can be controlled by isolation. The ratings are greatly improved by using SILENT BLUE™ underlayment. The higher the IIC number the better the impact sound insulation.

Measure of resistance of a building element such as a floor or wall to the passage of audible sounds. The higher the STC number the better the sound barrier.

NEW Silent Blue Installation Tips and Tricks
1. Clean sub-floor, remove all debris.
2. Check sub-floor levelness. Float uneven areas if necessary. Check with each
laminate flooring manufacturer for recommendations. Generally, no more than 3/16”
over a 10 square foot span is allowable.
3. 3. Roll out the first row of SILENT BLUE™ underlayment, Mylar side down (Mylar side up when installing over radiant heat systems) allowing the pad to run up the walls 1 to 2 inches.
4. Begin installing your floor.
5. When you are near the edge of the first row of pad, roll out the second row of pad.
6. Be sure to align the edges of the first and second rolls as tightly as possible.
7. Tape underlayment seam with a moisture resistant polyethylene tape.
(SILENT BLUE™ tape is available, offering a wider tape width that allows for easier
rolling and added moisture protection.)
Tip - Tape must be a continuous, unbroken run to properly seal the seam. Overlap the
tape if necessary to assure the seam is sealed.
Tip - Use moisture resistant polyethylene tape to seal any rips or punctures in
underlayment.
8. Repeat until installation is complete.
9. Trim excess underlayment to allow for baseboard or quarter round install.
While this installation is recommended for SILENT BLUE™ Underlayment, some
manufacturers may have slight or even great variances to their preferred,
recommended or even mandated installation instructions. However, any laminate
underlayment should be installed free of rips, punctures or holes and the use of a
quality polyethylene tape will prevent any moisture from rising to the laminate floor.
