Classified Details The Midnight Special Megaset 31 Discs Biggest Set available! BeeGees

Special.jpg

Up for sale is an incredible set of 31 DVD's worth of performances from of NBC's beloved late night 90 minute music extravaganga, The Midnight Special.

The Midnight Special was a late-night rock music series airing Friday nights (or rather early morning Saturdays). This 90-minute show followed "The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson."

In its first years, The Midnight Special began at 1:00 am. But when Johnny Carson cut his own show from 90 to 60 minutes, Midnight Special's starting time was changed to 12:30am.

NBC broadcast the pilot on August 19, 1972 as a 90-minute special. The Midnight Special became a weekly series beginning February 2, 1973.

For most of its run, the series featured guest hosts each week. The exception to this was from July 1975 through March 1976 when Helen Reddy was the regular host.

Wolfman Jack was a regular fixture on the series. He served as announcer and frequent guest host. In addition, he often interviewed the guests.

Around 1978, at the height of the Disco craze, the studio was changed to resemble a Disco nightclub complete with a platform dance floor. Wolfman Jack was even placed behind an elevated D.J. booth. But by Fall 1979, as the disco craze waned, the disco set was gone.

The Midnight Special was often criticized for not giving enough attention to the punk & new wave music of the late-1970s to early 1980s. While a few punk/new wave acts were featured, the majority of the guests continued to be MOR and disco acts.

Beginning April 11, 1980, The Midnight Special faced competition from ABC's Fridays, a Saturday Night Live style comedy series. Fridays' musical guests were often more cutting edge than those seen on The Midnight Special.

In May 1981, NBC replaced The Midnight Special with SCTV Network 90, an expanded version of Second City TV..... What a waste!!

A Brief description of the discs follows.

First off in the late '90's VH1 rebroadcast a LOT of Midnight Special performances. The first EIGHT discs of this set contain performances sourced from the VH1 rebroadcasts and in its entirety a 9th disc of the pilot episode from August 19, 1972 from a decent quality broadcast sourced VHS tape. Picture quality varies from 8 to 9 of 10 for these nine discs. Audio quality is superb. Of special note in these VH1 sourced disc is two separate discs of nearly two hours of BeeGees material featuring the Brothers Gibb in their PRIME. The mini set with the guys sharing the stage with a still young and vibrant Jerry Lee Lewis for several songs is astounding! Just about Anybody who was Somebody in 70's rock is featured on these various compilation discs.... Fleetwood Mac, Joe Walsh, ELO, Heart, Tom Jones, Queen, ABBA, Steely Dan, Steve Miller, Joe Cocker, The Hollies, Brownsville Station/Cub Koda, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Gladys Knight, Edgar Winter, Sly and the Family Stone, Jim Croce, Dr. Hook, Loggins & Messina, Ike & Tina Turner, Peter Frampton, Argent, Chicago, BTO, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Journey, Barry White and the Love Unlimited Orchestra, Billy Preston, Rick Derringer, Helen Reddy, Eric Weissberg and Deliverance, Cheap Trick, Eddie Money, Barry Manilow, Gordon Lightfoot, Rufus with the great Chaka Kahn, Jose Feliciano, Manfred Mann's Earth Band.... and the lost goes on.... and on.... and on....

Next we have a long out of print disc of Midnight Special performances by the late great Andy Kaufman. Perfect DVD rip audio and video quality.

Also included is the fantastic 1973 David Bowie and Friends broadcast from London's Marquee Club.

Finally we have the more familiar 20 disc G/R "subscription" discs. Each and every one a SOLID 9.5 out of 10 in audio and video quality. Note that the very rare and hard to find Flashback to 1973 disc plays ALL the performances 100% all the way through in perfect quality. FFWD/Rewind works fine. But, the Menu function is disabled on this one disc only.

If only these twenty PERFECT QUALITY DVD rip subscription discs are desired, they can be purchased separately for only $59.
