A 70'S CELEBRATION: THE BEAT IS BACK (1993)DVD
If you're eager to try on those old platform shoes and leisure suits in the closet (your own or your parents'), a perfect excuse can be found in "A 70's Celebration: The Beat Is Back." the two-hour review of music, fads, fashions and dances, primarily disco, has one insistent message: The 1970's are hip again.
this show is indeed an unabashed celebration. The first host is introduced as "a major star of any decade, Miss Olivia Newton-John." The final segment, with the Bee Gees, pulses with the kind of lighting tricks that once transported disco dancers to higher realms. Hosting different segments of the show are Bo (John Schneider) and Luke (Tom Wopat) from "The Dukes of Hazzard," Lenny (Michael McKean) and Squiggy (David Lander) from "Laverne and Shirley," and a contingent from "The Brady Bunch," led by Florence Henderson. Even period television commercials are tossed into the bell-bottomed format: e.g., Alka-Seltzer's "Mama mia, dattsa spicy meatball!"
Donna Summer sings her "Last Dance" Also bringing down the house are Gloria Gaynor ("Never Can Say Goodbye"), Vicki Sue Robinson ("Turn the Beat Around"), Thelma Houston ("Don't Leave Me This Way")KC AND THE SUNSHINE BAND..
Some of the best moments involve the pairings of veteran and current stars: Taylor Dayne joins the Spinners on "Then Came You"; the Stylistics and the young group Shai team up on "You Make Me Feel Brand New"; Richard Marx blends in beautifully with Randy Meisner, formerly of the Eagles, on that group's classic "Take It to the Limit."
Meanwhile, everybody get in line and let's do -- "The Hustle."
