A cattle drive across 1000 miles of dangerous territory to the state of Texas.

Thomas Dunson (James Arness) portrays a cattle rancher at odds with his adopted son. Matthew Garth (Bruce Boxleitner) is the adopted son of Thomas Dunson. Matt is the ramrod of the trail drive, Tom is the trail boss. After several problems arrise father and son lock horns over the way the hands are being treated, And things continue to get worse until a final showdown between father and son.


This movie is based on the original Red River starring John Wayne in 1948.

Gunsmoke star James Arness was the protege of movie star legend John Wayne, it seems all together fitting and proper that James Arness step into John Wayne's role in the 1988 Made For Television movie remake of the film classic Red River from 1948. The remake follows the original closely, at least during the first half. No nonsense trail boss Thomas Dunson (James Arness), in charge of a major cattle drive, He runs roughshod over his hired hands. The adopted son of the trail boss Matthew Garth (Bruce Boxleitner) is playing the role that Montgomery Clift did in the original film in 1948, He finally rebels against his adopted father because of his actions toward the hired hands. Thomas Dunson (James Arness) hires some new men to help him go after his adoped son. Gregory Harrison, who also produced the film, Stars as the hot headed gunfighter Cherry Valance, The same character was played by John Ireland in the 1948 original film. Television fans will see several former Western Television Stars like Guy Madison, John Lupton, Robert Horton, and Ty Hardin in supporting roles. Red River (1988) first rode over the Television horizon on April 10, 1988.
