What
are Soapnuts?
Soapnuts are the fruit of the Sapindus Mukorossi, a tree found
primarily in India and Nepal. The shell contains saponin, which is
known for its ability to cleanse and wash. Although they are just
starting to become popular in the Americas and Europe, Soapnuts have
been used for centuries and go by many common and not so common
names including; soaputs, soap nuts, soapnut, soap nut, soapberries,
soap berries, soapberry, soap berry, washnuts, wash nuts, washnut,
wash nut, soap pods, Ritha, Reetha, Aritha, Dodan, Doadni,
Doda, Kanma, Thali and noix de lavage
The most common use of Soapnuts is to remove dirt from
clothing. It's not only highly effective but also very gentle and
safe to use on even your most delicate articles of clothing
including cashmere, wool and silk. Because it is mild and natural,
it preserves the colors and the structure of your clothing longer
than chemical detergents. It actually softens your clothing
naturally to so you will no longer need to use laundry softener: The
laundry turns out amazingly soft! Because of these characteristics,
soapnuts are the perfect detergent.
Soapnuts are completely natural. Take a look at the label on your
current laundry detergent. Find anything like:
* anionic and nonionic surfactants
* buffering agents
* perfumes
* "quality control" agents
This list can be translated to: chemicals, allergens, and
pollutants. Soapnuts, on the other hand, contain no man-made
ingredients and are 100% all natural making them great for people
with allergies and skin conditions.
Using
soapnuts is easy, just place 3-6 shell halves
in a cotton /muslin sack (muslin sack provided with every order from
Nine Lucky Stars) or and old sock tied off works just as well. Then
drop it in your washing machine with your dirty clothing. Just
remember to remove it before drying. Thats it! Your clothes will
turn out clean and fresh. If you prefer clean clothing with a nice
scent you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil such as
lavender or lemon. You can apply the drops (2-4 does the trick)
directly to the soapnut sack before dropping it in the washing
machine. You can use that same soapnuts for up to 3-4 loads and you
can reuse the sack over and over. Soapnuts are all-natural,
and are therefore healthier for you, your clothes and the
environment. They are a great addition to any home that likes to be
"green". Once all the soap has been used up out of the soapnut
shells you can compost them!
Soapnut usage doesn't stop at your
washing machine! You can replace just about every other liquid
cleaner and soap with soapnuts! Soapnuts can be made in to a liquid
commonly referred to as soapnut liquid or soapnut juice. This liquid
can be used as hand soap, shampoo, spray cleaner, glass cleaner,
dish soap, dishwasher detergent, car wash, pet shampoo, insect
repellant on plants and just about anything else you can imagine
using liquid soap and liquid cleaners for. More information on how
to make and use soapnut liquid is available at the provided websites
about and will also be emailed to you when your order is shipped.
