Plot description: This gentle clash-of-cultures tale concerns a US Armed Forces Sergeant stationed in 1949 Osaka where he overcomes his hostility to the Japanese in helping the Sisters of Charity rebuild an orphanage, then falls in love with a helpful interpreter. Three Stripes in the Sun was based on a written piece called "The Gentle Wolfhound", a New Yorker article written by Eliza J. Kahn Jr. Set in postwar Japan, the film concerns the activities of three U.S.-occupation soldiers: Sergeant Hugh O'Reilly (Aldo Ray), Colonel William Shepherd (Phil Carey) and Corporal Neeby Muhlendorf (Dick York). Though he hates the Japanese with a passion, Sergeant O'Reilly softens as he gets to know the local citizenry. Soon, the hard-bitten Sergeant is sneaking food provisions to the Japanese children and donating his GI pay towards the building of an orphanage; He also falls in love with a local Japanese interpreter employed by the US Army, Yuko Nashua (Mitsuko Kimura). Written and directed by Richard Murphy, this fact-based story has its sentimental moments but is mostly clear-eyed in its account of interracial misunderstandings and healings. Serving as technical adviser on Three Stripes in the Sun is Master Sergeant Hugh O'Reilly, the genuine, real-life soldier on which Aldo Ray's character is based.
