Liquid Helium Processing For Ultra Cryogenic Applications

At the Cryogenic Institute of New England, we have developed special capabilities to utilize liquid helium for the most advanced and demanding cryogenic treatments and processes. This enables us to bring parts to temperatures approaching absolute zero (0 Kelvin).

While liquid nitrogen typically exists within the range of approximately 77.2 K (–320F), liquid helium exists within the range of approximately 5.2K (-450 F). By utilizing liquid helium as a cryogen, we are able to reach much lower temperatures than most other cryogenic laboratories or processors.

Liquid helium has many special characteristics that require special considerations. For one, it is a rare and very expensive material that is distributed only per allocations controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

Secondly, liquid helium has one of the lowest atomic masses of any material. Helium is so light; it reverts to gaseous state at very low pressures. So it is not only very volatile, but it is also very difficult to transfer liquid helium in application.

Through experience that we have gained in working with our customers, we have been able to offer specialty processing of parts through our liquid helium treatment. Typical applications have included thermal cycling of sensitive aerospace components, audio cables and new experimental materials.

The purpose of some of our liquid helium processing has been to meet dramatic thermal cycling requirements, relief of residual material stresses, failure testing analysis and validation, material preconditioning and efforts in support of traditional research and development activities.

Because of the unique work that we have been involved with, many of our applications cannot be disclosed as they are secured by Non-Disclosure Agreements to which we are bound. However, we are continually putting our experience to work for new customers with new requirements.
