1969 Ford XL Convertible: 429 cid 7.0L Thunder Jet V-8 4barrel, SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic transmission, Cobra Jet Cam. Definitely a head turner to the younger crowd. A great weekend sweatshirt-ballcap car as is. Like anything that is old, this car has developed it's own character and has a unique style. Has collector plates (no more license fees) or can be switched back to regular plates with no issues. Currently running status, starts from cold start within 2 tries, no fluid leaks (except for a drip or two from transmission every week.) Has everything needed/working to drive on the road today. Ford's family of sedans in 1969 was the Ford LTD, the Ford XL, the Ford Galaxie 500, Ford Custom 500 and the Ford Custom. The XL came in two major versions, the XL SportsRoof and XL Convertible. Among the two XL models there was an option for the GT Performance Group with a 390 or 429 V-8, referred to as the Thunder Jet V-8. The Thunder Jet came in two configurations, the 2V or 4V (2-barrel, 4 barrel carburetor.) There is minor confusion on the topic of what exactly is an XL. Parts dealers have classified the XL as a Galaxie 500 XL but it is not true to the 1969 Ford sales brochure. While the XL shares much of the body design and parts of the LTD and Galaxie 500, it's class position is below the LTD and above the Galaxie 500. The Custom 500 and Ford Custom sedans were the next level down, as value sedans. The top of the line model of that year was the LTD Brougham trim. While doing research on this vehicle I found out how to visually identify the 1969 Ford models: the LTD clearly has "LTD" lettering on the front nose and rear trunk along with "disappearing headlamps." The XL has "XL" lettering on the front nose, rear trunk and disappearing headlamps. The Galaxie 500 has distinct "Galaxie 500" lettering on rear quarter panels near the bumper and have regular headlamps. The Custom and Custom 500 share similar markings as the Galaxie, with the lettering on the rear quarter panel. Similarities? All of them share the same type of rear tail-light and body design. The LTD, XL and Galaxie 500 share the same "429" emblem on the front quarter panels near the front bumper. The interiors are similar too with the exceptions of comfortweave "breathable" vinyl, comfortweave "knitted" vinyl, grains of simulated wood or all-vinyl trim. The LTD and XL share a similar front grill with disappearing headlamps along with the emblem display around the lettering of LTD, or XL. There are no GT designations on this vehicle by markings or via the vin number. The 1969 sales brochure advertised the GT as having the 390 or 429 V-8. This vehicle has the 429 cid engine. The GT Performance setup included: power front disc brakes, competition suspension, high ratio rear axle, 55 amp alternator and a limited-slip differential.
