Classified Details Southeast Alaska Salmon Fishing Trip Lodging Very Affordable
laurasalmon.JPG

1 to 6 days ALASKA Salmon Fishing Trip Lodging

Three years ago, we bought a cabin at Whale Pass, Alaska. (My wife calls it a cabin, I call it a fishing lodge, the Coho Chalet.) It needed a lot of work, and we have spent the past three summers fixing it up.

At roughly 2000 square feet, it now has two full baths, and 4 bedrooms. While we still have a little work to do, it is ready to accommodate a few fisherman who want to wet their lines in some of the best Coho waters in the world.

Whale Pass is located on the North end of Prince of Wales Island (POW), northwest of Ketchikan. It is the third largest island in the United States. There are close to 1300 miles of road to explore. POW's population is sparse, being about 5000 people on the whole island.

Whale Pass has about 50 full time residents. There are a lot of black bears (no brown’s or grizzlies), lots of Sitka Blacktail deer, lots of Bald Eagles, and tons of fish!

It is about a 5 minute walk behind the Lodge, and down the trail to Neck Outlet. Our property goes right to the water. This is in the tidal zone, and the fishing here is at times outrageous. You can fish from the bank, or we have a small aluminum boat you can row around in the inlet. You can fly fish, or spinner fish. Even snagging is allowed in salt water.

You are allowed 6 Coho per day, and 6 Pink (humpy) salmon per day. There are also numerous other streams within a 20 mile radius that all have excellent fishing. Plus Neck Lake which has good trout fishing (rainbow and brook).

(Lets do a little math here. 6 coho at 5 lbs each filleted for 5 days is 150 pounds of fillets. Fresh Wild Alaska Coho goes for about $18.00 a pound. Eighteen times 150 equals $2700.00 of fish!)

We are not a guide service. We only provide you with a place to stay, a place to process your fish, and something to eat. We also enjoy fishing, and if the weather is good, and you want to help with the boat gas ($60/trip), you can join us in some halibut fishing, crabbing, and shrimping. (No guarantees on the halibut though, as the weather dictates if we go out.) We do eat crab every night!

We have home-type vacuum packers for you to use, but you need to bring your own vacuum bags. We have freezers to put your fish in.

If you stay with us, you will be treated like family. There are some rules. No smoking, no drugs, no swearing, only social drinking. You will have your own bedroom, and share your own bathroom. You will be expected to pick up after yourself. We are not going to be a butler or a maid. If you want that, then the lodge across the bay is where you need to go, at $1400 per day.

We eat very simply. Good plain food, but not 10 course meals (like across the bay). If there is something special you want to eat, or a special seasoning, then bring it with you. It is 70 miles to the nearest grocery store, so if we run out of something, we make do.

We have a couple small smokers to use if you want to smoke some fish. You might want to bring your own smokin’ chips.

There is a church nearby if you want to go. We have electricity (52 cents per KWH second most expensive in the USA), and telephone. There is internet access at the small library about 6 miles away. No TV!

What we have is a very informal B&B, which we have named the Coho Chalet. There is nothing fancy here. It is clean, and warm, with wood heat. We are remodeling the rooms. The previous owners had sheet rock on them, and in most instances, it is coming down, and wood is going up. We are not a 5 star establishment, but your home probably isn’t either.

While we are relatively new at this venture, over the last 3 years, we have had several weekly visitors. A good time was had by all.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

To get here, you can drive to Prince Rupert, BC Canada. From the US/Canadian border is about a 2 to 4 day drive, depending on how much you stop. If you love spectacular scenery, we highly recommend this trip. Once at Prince Rupert, take the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry (1-800-642-0066) to Ketchikan. Then you need to take the Prince Of Wales Island ferry (1-866-308-4848) to Hollis. It is then about a 80 mile drive to our lodge.

Having your own car allows for a lot of sightseeing adventures, and stream fishing all across the Island.

Also you have the option to take the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry from Bellingham Washington (1-800-642-0066). The ferry is what I call a poor mans cruise. It is really nice, and very comfortable. You can take it either to Ketchikan, or to Wrangell, Alaska. The POW ferry goes from Wrangell to Coffman Cove, which is about a 45 mile drive from Whale Pass.

If you want to fly, Alaska
Airlines flies into Ketchikan and Wrangell each morning. Their number is 1-800-252-7522. In Ketchikan, you can rent a car (search: car rentals Ketchikan), and take the POW ferry, of charter a float plane (search: airlines Ketchikan or Wrangell).

MORE INFO

Here are some web sites to check out. This first is for the Lodge At Whale Pass. www.whalepass.com . It is across the bay from us. It is a 5 star establishment. Then you can check out the POW website at www.princeofwalescoc.org/index.html .

Our web site is www Coho-Chalet.com .

There is a lot to see and do. Southeast Alaska is an experience everyone must savoir at least once.

Please email me with any questions you have. All days are available between May 15 and July 31, 2009. Coho fishing here starts around the 1st of June, and runs through mid August.

This is for 1 to 6 days and nights accommodations, your choice, as described above. The price is $125.00 per person per day. Your final bill will be your daily amount times the number of days you want to stay.

This does not include any transportation, or fishing licenses, fishing gear, rain clothes or personal supplies.

Even if you can't go now, plan on seeing this spectacular country someday. But don’t wait too long, as father time and old age has a tendency to creep up rather fast the older we get.
