-----------------------------------The story begins in the late 18th century and ends with a typical 20th century conflict over land usage. Centennial, however, largely concentrates on various memorable frontiersmen, trappers, Indians, ranchers, cowboys, and farmers from long ago. Richard Chamberlain shines as the pioneer Alexander McKeag, Robert Conrad does some of his best work as French-Canadian Pasquinel, and performances by Alex Karras, Chad Everett, Sally Kellerman, Raymond Burr, Richard Crenna, David Janssen, lynn Redgrave, Brian Keith, and Dennis Weaver effectively add to a tapestry of adventure, tragedy, violence, and dubious Western progress. Produced at a time when TV networks were in the throes of acknowledging America's history of racial injustice, the program paints a starkly villainous portrait of opportunists exploiting and destroying Indians in the name of manifest destiny. While the project's great length might make one wary of diving in, Centennial is the sort of carefully paced drama that makes one care about the intertwined destinies of unique characters and how they illuminate America's past. --Tom Keogh

Volume One:
"Only The Rockies Live Forever"

When great Arapoho chief Lame Beaver (Michael Ansara) meets the feisty Quebec trader Pasquinel (Robert Conrad), the two begin a relationship that will change the course of history.
In St. Louis, Pasquinel enters into a partnership with welthy silversmith Herman Bockweiss (Raymond Burr) and marries his daughter Lise (Sally Kellerman). Pasquinel brings guns and silver to the Indians and saves the life of a man who will become his new partner: Alexander McKeag (Richard Chamberlain), a Scotsman on the run from his past.
The men make their way to the Arapaho camp, where a wounded McKeag is tended to by Lame Beaver's beautiful daughter Clay Basket (Barbara Carrera). He soon falls in love with her, but she honors her father's wishes and instead weds Pasquinel--who, of course, is also married to Lise! Accompanied by Clay Basket, Pasquinel and McKeag set off on a journey of hidden emotions and bitter disappointment as they search for Lame Beaver's other prize--his discovery of gold.

"The Yellow Apron"

Despite mounting tensions between the two races, Paquinel, MeKeag and the Indians continue to enjoy a profitable relationship. Clay Basket bears Pasquinel two sons, while back in St. Louis, Lise gives birth to Pasquinel's daughter, Lisette. In an effort to unite his two families Pasquinel decides to bring Clay Basket and her young sons to St. Louis. But their journey eastward ends at a military fort where they are attacked by drunken U.S. soldiers. Physically and emotionally scarred, the boys are destined never to know a real home in either their mother's or father's world.

Over the years, Pasquinel's search for Lame Beaver's gold becomes a driving obsession which devides him from both Clay Basket and Lise. McKeag assumes responsibility for Pasquinel's Indian family, but as the years pass, the boys grow bitter and turn on their surrogate father who then leaves the family to trap in the uncharted wilderness. When McKeag visits St. Louis, Lise urges him to mend fences with Pasquinel, who is nearer than ever to the treasure he has sought for so many years.
