PROBE Complete 1988 TV Series

Probe is the continuing story of Austin James,
an eccentric genius who uses his scientific brilliance
and his devoted (occasionally scatterbrained) secretary
to solve seemingly unsolvable, sometimes supernatural
seeming crimes. Not the usual Asimov fair but well
worth watching. Probe appeals to science fiction fans
as well as mystery / detective show fans.

By proving that the average TV viewer isn't smart enough to get a show like this. This, and other shows like it that depend on sheer intellectual ability, sharp thinking, and complexity never survive on American television. This series proves that. Asimov was an absolute Genius, and almost all of his products were light-years above the quality necessary for commercial success. No flash, no high-tech machine or vehicle, no stupid gimmicks, no buffoonery, no T & A, and nothing but sheer brain candy. You have to be smart to get a show like this.

What a shame that programs which require audiences to be intelligent never make it. Asimov created a series that had nothing more than a smart main character, who used his wits and abilities to move through the world. The series itself only lasted for seven episodes

Probe was created by science fiction grandmaster Isaac Asimov, and it clearly reflected the high intelligence and creativity of its founder. Parker played Austin James, a reclusive genius who founded a thinktank called Serendip, then retired to his own warehouse/laboratory/apartment to work in peace. That peace is shattered - but his life is enriched - when one of Serendip's executives hires him a secretary named Mickey Castle and forces them to work together. Austrin tries to drive her away, but Mickey's stubbornness proves equal to his own, and he soon comes to appreciate her unique insights - and her loyal gumption.
