Country, Rock 'n' Roll and Songwriter Hall Of Fame member Johnny Cash hosted his own variety television series from the Summer of 1969 until the Spring of 1971 and by all accounts the weekly program was MUST SEE TV. The Johnny Cash Show 1969-1971 is comprised of the ENTIRE series run of 58 episodes over 33 minimally compressed discs of EVERYTHING Cash and Company committed to tape in his hour long Variety Show. From presenting an eclectic and even-handed overview of popular music to the promoting of a humanitarian perspective on issues that mattered most to him: drug use, poverty, reliance on faith, compassion for criminals... IT'S ALL HERE!
A local fellow Cash enthusiast obtained this set from a collector in the Far East. These DVDs have the appearance of being sourced off high quality video tapes. NOT broadcast TV. NO COMMERCIALS WHATSOEVER. I would rate the audio and video quality of this set a SOLID and CONSERVATIVE 8 out of 10. The video blows up GREAT on my 42 inch Panasonic monitor and the audio sounds even better!
With some versions of this set there is an issue with show #6 as parts of two other shows are mixed in with parts of this episode. This set has this episode in its entirety as originally broadcast with absolutely no loss of continuity.
Many other Cash sets leave out the rare episode #41. This episode is also present in this set... albeit in a black and white Kinescope appearing format.
This set also has as a bonus two discs... FOUR HOURS of the best performances of the series in 10 of 10 commercial DVD rip quality. These two "bonus" discs are essentially the same product you would buy at the mall. Get them here and SAVE!!
For the real Cash fans I have available the complete run of the Johnny Cash and Friends 1976 "Summer Replacement" CBS series. This great show was a replacement for the Sonny & Cher show and featured a very young Steve Martin and Jim "Ernest" Varney in the cast. $20 for these episodes and they ship for free if ordered with the big set.
