For sale is ALL 18 hours/17 episodes of the 1981/1982 Bret Maverick NBC series on 9 DVD's. Yes. The Bret Maverick set is at long last in near DVD rip commercial DVD quality! This is James Garner's rarest and most hard to find episodic TV Western show.
This new as of mid-November 2008 satellite TV sourced Bret Maverick set unlike the older versions of this set has TERRIFIC video and audio quality. 9.5 out of 10! Please be advised that the Bret Maverick 11 disc sets sold for years is totally TRASH with two missing episodes, MANY unedited commercials.....I could go on... The newer "upgraded" 4 and 9 disc versions of this set recently being sold are still sourced from the same old VHS tapes. These sets aren't much better as it was me that personally did the VHS to DVD transfers of the Night at the Red Ox and Rattlesnake Brigade episodes that were used in the upgrading of the old 11 disc set to the newer yet flawed 4 and 9 disc sets so I know what I'm talking about! Anyone selling the VHS sourced 4 or 9 disc versions of this set is selling third or fourth generation versions of my own work. THIS new as of mid November 2008 satellite TV sourced 9 disc Bret Maverick set is the Bret Maverick set you want! The difference is AMAZING between this 9 disc set and the older ones.

The details of the 1981/1982 Bret Maverick series:

The 1957 through 1962 version of Maverick reached the pinnacle of episodic television with actor James Garner and writer Roy Huggins creating a TRULY unforgettable character. This noble attempt at a revival falls somewhat short of the original. Of course, so did practically everything else produced for TV in the early '80's. In fairness the seventeen episodes of the Bret Maverick series should be judged on its own terms. The problem is with the scripts, starting with the poorly paced pilot, an hour's worth of script padded to two hours and resorting to a sequence featuring Stuart Margolin as an Indian guide tediously and endlessly leading Garner around in circles in the desert. This scene is thankfully trimmed to good effect for the 95 minute "TV Movie" version included in this set in lieu of the two hour long "padded" versions as originally shown. A gambling sequence earlier on misses a boat by not focusing on the other players at all. The Dandy Jim Buckley character with Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. would have been a most welcome addition had it been possible. Some of the celebrities of the day incorporated into various episodes are weirdly the wrong age, with such eye-opening curiosities as an elderly Doc Holiday, and Theodore Roosevelt presented as a spherical figure of comic relief at a point when he would actually have been a wiry young rancher venturing West to recover from the double deaths of his young wife and mother. The worst aspect of the show, though, is the premise of Maverick settling down in one spot, when nonstop drifting is such a signature part of his identity. Some of the scripts are quite good, and Garner himself is always so very entertaining to watch, particularly in this, his best ever role. Jack Kelly, who played his brother Bart in both series, is dead now, and it would be a shame to miss the opportunity to check in on Maverick at a more advanced age. "Bret Maverick" is a good series on its own merit, but not as good as Garner's other three major series, "Nichols," "The Rockford Files," or especially the original "Maverick," which remains the gold standard in the annals of both Garner and series television. This series stands as a footnote to the original and an intriguing curio. NBC obviously jumped the gun by canceling it too soon. Think of what could have been..... Jack Kelly was featured in the last episode shown... The Hidalgo Incident. Plans were for him to return as a regular in season 2... Then NBC pulled the plug....
