This sale is for a DVD of the HBO America Undercover Special "LaLee's Kin: The Legacy of Cotton". By tying together the legacy of slavery and sharecropping with inferior education, illiteracy and poverty, the filmmakers remind us that not all slavery ended with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
I'm sure there will be some who find Lalee Wallace's world—her excitement over a better trailer home, the lack of running water, her aimless adult children and the struggle for survival amid tumble-down surroundings—shameful or cliched. But because "Lalee's Kin," (which received an Oscar nomination), is a documentary, it is less concerned with fashion and more concerned with reality, and covers that reality with scenes that are inspiring, moving and sometimes depressing.
The documentary shifts between two primary locations: the trailer where Wallace lives with many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and the local public schools, part of the West Tallahatchie School District, where student performance is so low that the state is threatening to take over. Wallace's great grandmother, grandmother and mother all worked in the cotton fields, received little education and had large numbers of children.
Cotton was king and picking cotton was the only way that area people made "a living." At the school, an administrator explains how not too long ago, the school year didn't even start for Black children in the area until the final cotton crop was picked during the fall. "It has become ingrained that getting an education is not important," says the district superintendent Reggie Barnes. Educators are still fighting to change that mindset. At the same time, they have the daunting task of educating children of the illiterate, if the cycle of poor education and poverty is to end.
