Plot summary, written by Ron Martinez:
Hot Rod (1979) (a.k.a. Rebel of the Road) This made-for-TV movie starred Gregg Henry, Grant Goodeve and Robert Culp. The plot in this one has our hero Brian Addison (Henry) heading to the fictional Munn's Rootbeer Drag Race Nationals held in Lyons, California (the racing scenes were filmed at Fremont, CA). Addison is driving a 1965 Plymouth that is short on looks but is filled with a fire-breathing 426-Hemi. Meanwhile, papa-Munn (Culp) has the drag races fixed so that his kid, Sonny Munn (Goodeve), will win the races and go on to certain fame and fortune. How does he do this? Every competitor that doesn't run a Munn's decal on his car gets harassed by the corrupt local cops- that's how. Addison immediately develops an adversarial relationship with Sonny Munn who drives a hopped-up 1969 Olds Cutlass. Their first confrontation is in a street race which results in Addison's Plymouth being destroyed in a crash. A sympathetic junkyard owner gives Addison a 1941 Willys to race and keep if he promises to beat the hated Munns. The speed-shop owner throws in a 6-71 GMC blower just for kicks; Brian installs the Hemi engine from the Plymouth into the Willys. Sonny Munn (with the help of the cops) proceeds to steal the Willys and then blows up the Hemi by over-revving it! Brian's only hope is to steal another Hemi engine out of a local police car so that he can continue to compete for the championship. It would appear as if Lyons, CA is apparently the only place on the planet with Hemi-engined AMC Matador police cars, but don't get sidetracked with details! Does he eventually defeat Sonny Munn in the Nationals to preserve the honor of good-guys everywhere? Do you have to ask? The story is preposterous, the acting is horrible, and the writing is ridiculous, but this one is still a must-see!
Alternate plot summary, written by Ron Main and excerpted from his book, "Hot Rod Memories":
This one is a classic any fans of hot rods will want to see. It's all about the Munn's Root Beer Nationals at the "Baylands" Raceway Park in Fremont, California; Every competitor who doesn't run a Munn's decal on their car is harassed by the corrupt local Cops. But you'll see enough interesting cars to make this worth your while: A Hot Rod Hall Of Fame Museum that is seen in a few scenes includes a 'glass-bodied turtledeck 1927 T Roadster, a 1934 five-window and several early dragsters. The star of this movie drives a 1965 Plymouth two-door hardtop powered by a 426 Hemi. Later in the movie, the Hemi finds its way into a grey-primered 1941 Willys blown altered coupe that runs very low 11s on the dragstrip. There are also brief looks at a fiberglass Bantam Roadster with a Model T grille, a 1965 Chevy Nomad, plus lots of old Fords; Model As, several '32s (including a three-window and a five-window), a yellow 1939 sedan delivery with a Deluxe grille and a red 1940 Woody. The race cars in "Hot Rod" include a 'glass Fiat altered coupe, a 1948 Austin, some mid-'70s Funny Cars, some Camaros and Mustangs, plus several Top Fuel cars. This was a great made-for-TV-movie that stars Robert Culp and Pernell Roberts.
