The Short Films of David Lynch with commentaries by Lynch.

Six Men Getting Sick (1967)
This very short piece of animation was Lynch’s introduction to the art of filmmaking. Conceived as part of a moving sculpture, the short is a one-minute loop depicting the title event. The animation reminds me of the Terry Gilliam cartons for Monty Python, perhaps on a day when Gilliam was experiencing a particularly bad LSD trip.

The Alphabet (1968)
For my money, this is the most disturbing four minutes that David Lynch has ever filmed. A mix of animation and live action, portraying a young girl’s nightmarish recitation of her ABC’s. The Alphabet clearly establishes the groundwork for Lynch’s unique filmmaking style.

The Grandmother (1970)
Another blend of live action and animation, this 34 minute piece was Lynch’s first narrative film. A young boy, abused by his animal like parents, plants a seed that sprouts a most unusual flower, the kindly grandmother he always wanted. Completely devoid of intelligible dialogue there is a lot of grunting and squealing, the film is thoroughly surreal, bizarre, and unmistakably Lynch. The foundation is built here for the themes and visual style that would be developed further in Eraserhead.

The Amputee (1973)
Ostensibly nothing more than a quality comparison between two brands of videotape for the American Film Institute (yes, you can already see the irony), Lynch’s quirky sense of humor is given a workout here. Allowed the flexibility to shoot anything he wanted as a test subject, let’s just say that Lynch had some fun with the assignment. The piece runs a little under 5 minutes and is repeated twice (once for each brand of tape), and is equally disgusting nad hilarious each time. Catherine Coulson, the Log Lady herself, stars in the title role. The tape quality, incidentally, is awful both times, no doubt intentionally manipulated to appear so.

The Cowboy and The Frenchman (1987)
An unfortunate foray into slapstick, this dismal film was made for French television as part of a larger project in which famous filmmakers were asked to describe their view of France from the outside. An apologist might claim that Lynch’s piece is an examination of cliches and broad stereotypes (both of Americans and French), but the sad truth is that the thing just isn’t funny at all. It is worse than the worst episode of On the Air, Lynch’s failed sitcome for ABC. The film is interesting from the perspective o seeing Lynch fall on his face attempting comedy.

Lumiere (1995)
The only of Lynch’s shorts to have appeared previously on DVD (as part of the film Lumiere & Co.) this 55 second oddity was already the highlight of that previous movie. Excerpted here with permission, the film works equally well even out of context Lynch’s video introduction explains the rules for the original project, so I will not bother to summarize them, other than to say that I think Lynch must have broken at least one of them to achieve his results. I can’t imagine how he made it work otherwise.
