Tomorrow. At a Californian space research facility, the new liaison officer between the government and the facility's steering committee, Arthur Nordlund, arrives to determine the worth of its work carried out there. One of the scientists, Jim Tanner, explains that the main purpose of the research being carried out is to determine the maximum physical and psychological pressure that can be endured by potential astronauts. Before the start of the meeting to discuss the facility's work, the liaison is warned about a presentation to be made by one of the committee members, Harry Helsom, considered somewhat unstable concerning a questionnaire and IQ test used to assess committee members. Despite protestations from the rest of the committee, Jim Tanner allows Helsom to proceed. The very agitated scientist shows the rest of the committee the results of his work which, he claims that someone present has an intellect so advanced that it represents an advance in human evolution. Ridiculed by the others present, a simple test is arranged to prove or disprove his claims whereby a sheet of paper is spiked onto a pencil and everyone asked to concentrate. To everyone's surprise the paper begins to spin. Later Tanner and his lover, geneticist Margery Lansing, discuss the possibility of a person being genetically far in advance of anyone else in the human race. Meanwhile back at the research facility, Helsom is preparing to leave with his scientific papers when he is overcome by a strange force. At his apartment, Hamilton receives a 'phone call from Helsom's wife, expressing concern at her husband being very late home from work. He is persuaded to return to the facility and investigate by his lover. There they find Helsom's office deserted and his papers missing apart from a piece of paper with the name "Adam Hart" written on it. The couple then hear the sound of centrifugal test apparatus being tested and rush to the equipment's control room. There it becomes apparent that someone is inside the machine, but attempts to shut the equipment down prove futile. Eventually an emergency shut-off switch is located. Inside the apparatus Helsom is found dead, crushed by the effect of extreme g-forces. Some time later, with the police in attendance, Hamilton is told by the scientist's widow that she vaguely remembers her late husband referring to a man called Adam Hart many years before. The detective in charge of the case shows Tanner that the control panel for the centrifugal test equipment is in fact working perfectly well...
The Power was the fourth and final collaboration between director Byron Haskin and Hungarian émigré producer George Pal and the last ever theatrical release by the former. The infrequent partnership had began with the seminal alien invasion movie War of the Worlds (53) and continued with the ecological adventure The Naked Jungle (53) and temporarily ended with the troubled space opera The Conquest of Space (55). Separately both had notable careers in the SF and fantasy fields but this 1967 production stands out from both men's canon.
