Something Is Out There started life as a 4 hour TV mini-series (edited time 165 mins) which focused on a police detective investigating a series of bizzare murders. A number of murders take place where the victim appears to have been the subject of an exploratory operation, all performed within a few split seconds. At each of the locations, the cop (Jack Breslan, played by Joe Cortese) sees the same young woman (Tara, played by Maryam d'Abo).
Deciding to pursue her, Jack discovers she has some unique abilities and is carrying a weapon which emits a beam of raw energy. After she gives him the slip, he discovers a piece of equipment which she dropped. He catches her when she searches for his appartment, and forces her to explain what is going on. She pursuades him to take her to a location in the desert where she shows him a Shuttle craft and explains that she was a Med Tech officer on a prison ship. The prison ship was carrying a dangerous criminal, a Xenomorph, which can change shape at will. Despite precautions, it escaped by taking control of a prison warder and the other prisoners minds. After killing most of the occupants of the ship, it escapes to Earth in a shuttle craft.
She pursued it to Earth and is now attempting to track it. Jack agrees to join forces with her and together they set out to track the Xenomorph down. After several close shaves, Tara concludes it has not found the technology it needs to travel home on Earth and has returned to the Prison Ship. She and Jack return to the ship, after having let Jack's boss, Vic in on her secret, and attempt to defeat the Xenomorph. Eventually they are able to corner it and but it takes over the dead bodies of the other prisoners and uses them to release it. In the end, they try to destroy it by crashing the space ship into one of Earth's oceans.
Escaping themselves from the resulting large explosion by hiding in the prison cell once used for the Xenomorph, they believe the creature to have been destroyed. Tara is now left stranded on Earth and Jack offers to help her find her feet.
