Basic Storyline
Detective Ezekiel Stone (the most decorated detective in the NY police department) had a good life, and a loving wife named Rosalyn, whom he had married in 1980. Then, in 1983, his wife was raped by a serial rapist named Gilbert Jax. Though captured, Jax escaped going to prison due to a technicality. Angered, Stone hunted Jax down and killed him, making the death look like a drug overdose. Internal Affairs looked into the case and began to suspect Stone's involvement. But before he could be arrested, Ezekiel himself was shot and killed by a street punk. Since he had never repented the murder of Jax, Stone was sent to Hell.
Fifteen years later, there was a mass escape of 113 damned souls from Hell. The damned souls returned to Earth acquiring their former bodies (or some semblance thereof - the exact mechanics of it were never explained). Some souls acquired powers in Hell, based on their former crimes. The longer you spend in Hell, we are told, the more it becomes a part of you.
Even Satan apparently has to answer to a higher power, so he was forced to bring his souls back to Hell
