This is a book about an exceptional collection of early dolls.

There weren't many doll collectors in those halcyon days, back in the 1940's and 1950's. And there weren't many sources to go to learn. Sometimes you'd hear word about another collector and then the letters flew back and forth, sharing what you'd found and what you'd learned. But mostly you were on your own with only knowledge of history, original owner's memories and personal taste to guide you.

In some ways you were lucky because in those days America's attics were still full. And if you knew an antique dealer that traveled back and forth to France in the days right after WWII you were really lucky, because wonderful dolls were being sold from fine old French estates to help in restoring the war-torn countryside. But you were really only lucky if you had curiosity, good taste, and courage. No, there weren't many doll collectors then, and there certainly aren't many of those fine old collections left to come onto the market today.

This collection is one. The name of the collector is left unsaid, at the request of the family, although it can be said that it is a prominent, and once well-known East Coast collection, featured in many early doll research books. What will be evident is the discerning taste and keen eye of this collector in seeking examples that were more than obvious. You will delight, for example, in the collection of early paper mache dolls, but then, on second glance, you will double-delight at such details as extraordinary sculpting and flirty eyes. You will, certainly, thrill at the sight of so many Bru bebes, but then you will look again, realizing how many of them are still wearing their original Bru dresses and shoes.

French poupees were a special love of our mystery collector, and with little to guide her except exceptional taste, she assembled a remarkable group of rarely found fashion dolls including examples by Levard, Bru, Clement, Huret, Jumeau, and Martin, many still wearing their original costumes, and more than ten with wooden articulated bodies.

Do you delight in mignonettes, early wax dolls, Schoenhut dolls and Schoenhut circus figures, early wooden dolls (including two from the collection of the early French doll and toy historian Henri d'Allegmagne), American cloth including Izannah Walker and Emma Adams, or German characters? You will find them all in this book. Collectors of rare china dolls have a special treat for six different very rare doll heads by KPM are included, as well as other rarities including swivel head taufling doll, sleep-eyed child doll, and large wooden-bodied china dolls. There are rare bisque dolls with sculpted hair on one hand, and mischievous googlies on the other. There are, in fact, more than 330 extraordinary dolls shown in these pages.
